No. 10 Indiana Claims Big Ten Glory Again

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 10 Indiana men's soccer team (12-2-3, 7-1-0 Big Ten) defeated the Michigan State Spartans (3-11-3, 3-4-1 Big Ten) by a score of 1-0 at DeMartin Stadium on Sunday afternoon to close the 2019 regular season.
With the victory, Indiana won the Big Ten regular season championship for the second-consecutive season. The regular season crown is the 16th in the program's history.
KEY MOMENTS
• Freshman Victor Bezerra drew a foul inside the 18-yard box to setup an Indiana chance from the spot. Sophomore Jack Maher calmly slotted home the penalty kick with his right foot for his third goal of the season.
• Michigan State found a number of chances in the 68th minute inside the 18-yard box. The defense stood tall against the flurry and cleared the threat with a blocked shot.
• Freshman goalkeeper Roman Celentano made two saves to preserve Indiana's sixth shutout of the season.
NOTABLES
• The back-to-back league titles mark the first consecutive championships since Indiana won the Big Ten regular seasons in both the 2006 and '07 seasons.
• Head coach Todd Yeagley has now won three Big Ten Conference championships in the regular season. Indiana also won the 2010 and '18 titles under Yeagley.
• Indiana will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and will host a quarterfinal match on Nov. 10 at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. IU will face the winner of the No. 8 and No. 9 seed match to be played at Armstrong Stadium on Nov. 9.
• IU improved to 41-8-5 in the series history with the Spartans and have remained unbeaten in the last six matches between the two schools.
