Indiana's Decade in Review

Bloomington, Ind.-- As we close a decade here at Indiana University, let’s check on some of our most memorable accomplishments of the past ten years.
TRACK & FIELD

In the men’s high jump, Derek Drouin captured the gold medal for Team Canada. Drouin wrapped up his career at Indiana as the first athlete in NCAA history to win five NCAA Championships in the high jump. Drouin was also named the Bowerman Award winner (track & field’s equivalent to the Heisman).
SWIMMING & DIVING

Swimming’s Lilly King won two gold medals to aid Team USA in the water with the 4x100m Relay and the 100m Breaststroke to cap off an incredible career at IU with multiple All-American honors, Big Ten titles and honors, etc.
Blake Pieroni assisted the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay with a time of 3:09.92 for first place. Pieroni was the third leg on the relay, finishing with a split of 3:09.92.
Coaches Ray Looze and Drew Johansen were on staff for Team USA as the assistant women’s swimming coach and head diving coach.
Both teams rounded out the decade with a sweep of Big Ten titles. This was the third-straight season that the men’s team captured the crown, its 27th in school history, while the women secured their sixth in program history.
A multitude of Indiana swimmers participated on other nations’ teams including Marwan El Kamas and Ali Khalafalla for Team Egypt, Anze Tavcar for Team Slovenia, James Connor for Team Australia, and Kennedy Gross for Team Canada.
MEN'S SOCCER

The Indiana men’s soccer team didn’t miss a single NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament postseason this past decade, including three College Cup appearances, capped off by a 2012 National Championship over Georgetown.
Men’s Soccer had 14 athletes represented as All-Americans over the past decade, the most of any Indiana program in that span.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

In 2018, the women’s basketball team was crowned WNIT champions with a 65-57 win over Virginia Tech. Following up that performance in 2019, Indiana entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 10 seed eventually upsetting No. 7 Texas 69-65 in Eugene, Oregon.
BASEBALL

Baseball made its appearance in the College World Series for 2013 after dominating the Tallahassee Super Regional over Florida State led by First-Team All-American Kyle Schwarber and Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Aaron Slegers.

Baseball captured the B1G regular season crown in 2013, 2014, and 2019 with tournament titles coming in 2013 and 2014. Indiana’s All-American Kyle Schwarber became the highest player ever selected in the 2014 MLB Draft, taken fourth overall by the Chicago Cubs.
FIELD HOCKEY

Field Hockey boasts two, two-time All-Americans from 2013-2016 with Audra Heilman (2013 and 2014) and Kate Barber (2015 and 2016).
WRESTLING

Nate Jackson got his second All-American honor during his senior campaign after a 3-1 (SV-1) win during the 2017 NCAA Tournament 184lbs.’ blood round.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Thomas Bryant scored 17 of his team-high 19 points in the second half and All-American Yogi Ferrell had 11 of his 18 in the final 20 minutes as the Big Ten Champions and No. 5 seeded Hoosiers topped SEC Champion No. 4 Kentucky 73-67 to move to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
All-American Yogi Ferrell hit a three-pointer as the shot clock wound down and 36.3 seconds left in the game as the Hoosiers ended clinching the 2016 Big Ten Title with an 81-78 win on the road at Iowa.
National Player of the Year Victor Oladipo hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left to send Indiana to the Sweet Sixteen for the second straight year with a 58-52 win over Temple in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. IU trailed the entire second half and held the Owls scoreless the final 3:09. IU scored the game’s final 10 points.
In what would have ended in a four-way tie for the 2013 Big Ten title with a loss, All-American Cody Zeller took over the season finale with IU trailing 71-66 with 52 seconds left at Michigan and scored 6 points, including the go-ahead basket with 13.7 seconds left. He also disrupted Big Ten Player of the Year Trey Burke’s game-winning shot attempt as IU won 72-71. It was IU’s first outright league title in 20 years.
Will Sheehey hit a 10-foot jumper with 10 seconds left and the Hoosiers held on to beat VCU 63-61 to advance to the 2012 NCAA Tournament’s Sweet Sixteen for the first time in 10 years. Victor Oladipo tied the game with 41 seconds left with a conventional three-point play.
VOLLEYBALL
Indiana Volleyball advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history during the 2010 Women’s Volleyball Tournament after toppling 19th-ranked Tennessee 3-2 (18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 27-25, and 15-13).
WATER POLO
Indiana’s water polo squad emerged Collegiate Water Polo Association champions after a 24-7 season before joining the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2019. During the 2012 campaign, Indiana garnered the most wins in program history with a 28-9 record.
ROWING

Indiana’s Varsity 4 boat finished a program-best ninth place at the 2019 NCAA Rowing National Championships. This comes just five years after the program’s first-ever NCAA Championship bid in 2014. That year, Indiana’s Head Coach Steve Peterson was named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Central Region Coach of the Year.
In 2016, the No. 13 Hoosiers finished fourth in the Big Ten Rowing Championships for its highest finish in Indiana rowing history. On that squad, Rebecca Brougher was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year.
FOOTBALL

On the football field, Indiana reached eight wins and bowl eligibility in 2019 while bringing the Old Oaken Bucket back to Bloomington in the process. Indiana had previously won four-straight Bucket games from 2013-2016 to go along with two-straight bowl appearances in 2015 and 2016.
Indiana’s Tevin Coleman rushed for 2,000 yards in 2014 as the first player in program history to do so and 18th in FBS history. That same year Indiana won on the road against #18 Missouri 31-27.
WOMEN'S TENNIS

Indiana’s women’s tennis program announced that long-time Head Coach Lin Loring was retiring after his 40th season at the helm amassing 804 wins for the cream and crimson, 16 Big Ten titles, 28 National Tournament appearances, and an AIAW National Championship in 1982.
MEN'S TENNIS

In 2012, the men’s tennis team picked up its first NCAA Tournament win in program history with a 4-2 win over No. 34 Louisville. In 2017, Sam Monette was named Regional Player of the Year for the Ohio Valley Region during his senior year.
SOFTBALL

In 2019, the team got off to a program best 14-0 while spending six-straight weeks ranked in the Top 25, its first time being ranked since 1996. In 2011, the team advanced to the NCAA Tournament and saw pitcher Morgan Melloh set Big Ten and Indiana records for single-season strikeouts (494).
In 2013, Indiana opened the current home of Softball Andy Mohr Field.
WOMEN'S GOLF

The team advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2019 for the 11th time in school history. During the 2017-18 season, Erin Harper became the first IU Individual to advance to the NCAA Championship since 1989. Four different players broke the record for single-season average, the most recent being Mary Parsons with a 73.31 in the 2017-18 season.
Both the men's and women's golf teams benefit from the opening of the Pfau Golf Course.
MEN'S GOLF

The decade was highlighted by 11 first-place finishes and four NCAA Tournament appearances.
Indiana will play their home matches at the newly constructed Pfau Golf Course.
WOMEN'S SOCCER

Oriancia Velasquez represented Indiana for Team Cambodia at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The decade was highlighted by a 15-7-1 overall record in 2013 that included an NCAA Tournament berth and a win over DePaul in the first round 1-0 before falling to North Carolina in the second.
