DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 24-ranked Indiana Softball team moved to 8-0 on the year with a 3-1 win against Duke on Saturday night in day two of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The start ties the 1977 team as the second-best in program history, surpassed only by an 11-0 record in 1990.
KEY MOMENTS
• IU put up a pair of runs in the third inning, taking advantage of a single from sophomore Camryn Woodall and a Duke error. After freshman Tete Hart came in to run for Woodall, sophomore Makayla Ferrari laid down a sacrifice bunt, but an overthrow by the Blue Devil third baseman allowed Hart to come all the way home and advanced Ferrari to second. Ferrari then stole third base and scored on an interference call.
• The Blue Devils quickly answered as Jameson Kavel hit a one-out triple off the wall in centerfield and was brought home on an RBI groundout by Caroline Jacobsen.
• The fifth inning again saw IU capitalize on a single by Woodall and a pair of Duke errors. After Woodall knocked a one-out hit through the left side, she was ruled safe at second on Ferrari's fielder's choice as the throw from the pitcher to second base was off the mark. Sophomore Taylor Lambert then singled to left and the Duke left fielder overthrew the ball to home, bringing in Woodall and extending the IU lead to 3-1.
• Duke looked to cut into the deficit in the seventh as Marissa Gagliano singled through the left side, however a double play ended the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Woodall turned in the first multi-hit performance of her career as she went 2-for-3 with a run.
• Senior Tara Trainer earned her fifth win of the season as she went the distance and struck out three. It marked the third complete game of the season.
• Saturday's start for Trainer was the 100th of her career.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"Our aggressive style of play really paid off today. We have to hit the ball better and we were too indecisive on the plate. But for right now, we're finding a way to win. I'm excited about our ballclub and what we're doing. Tara gave us a great start, defensively we made the plays we needed to and we did clutch up when we needed the insurance and that was nice to see. Camryn Woodall again was big for us today so I like what we're doing.
