Irvine, Calif. – The Indiana University water polo team faced two Top-25 contenders during this weekend's venture out west. The Hoosiers fell short during both match-ups against No. 1 USC (13-0, 1-0) and No. 7 UC Irvine (6-4).
Indiana opened up the weekend on Saturday, facing the undefeated Trojans in their second MPSF conference showdown of the season. The Hoosiers went on to Irvine, Calif. to battle the Anteaters where they showed a strong defensive attack.
No. 1 USC 19, No. 20 Indiana 1
Indiana met USC in the pool for the second time this season, but this time for an MPSF conference match-up. The Trojans proved to be just as strong defensively as they were on offense holding Indiana to just a single point game.
Junior Emily Powell tossed in the Hoosiers only goal during a 6-on-5 powerplay in the first quarter. The team went on to grab a combined four steals, two of which came from goalkeeper Sarah Greeven.
Greeven stood her ground in the goal, providing another three saves against USC. In the end, the Hoosiers lacked the fire needed to upset the Trojans.
No. 7 UC Irvine 12, No. 20 Indiana 6
Indiana provided an intense battle for UC Irvine after posting up on the defensive end. The Hoosiers took the Anteaters by storm grabbing a combined 11 steals, five from Emily Powell and another two each from Hannah Falls-Hand and Megan Abarta.
Adding to the defensive success, Indiana also provided 12 earned exclusions. Five of which were drawn from Izzy Manemda while Powell and Falls-Hand added two more each.
Abarta went on the offensive attack scoring three of the Hoosiers six goals with Mandema, Juli Hilovsky and Tina Doherty adding one more to the team total. Junior Gillian Gatecliff tossed over two assists, giving the Hoosiers an edge that forced UC Irvine to pay attention to.
