IU Qualifies 26 for Friday Night Finals at the Big Ten Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 2-ranked Indiana University men's swimming and diving team had a fantastic prelims session Friday morning at the 2019 Big Ten Men's Championships at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium in Iowa City, Iowa.
Indiana qualified for 26 finals in the morning, including 15 spots in Championship Finals. IU will also have seven in B Finals and four in C Finals.
The Hoosiers sit atop the team standings heading into Friday night with a score of 544 points. Michigan is in second place with a total of 490, while Ohio State is third with 375 points.
100 Butterfly
Indiana showed off in the 100 butterfly prelims, putting four swimmers in the Championship Final on Friday night.
Bruno Blaskovic earned the top-seed with a personal-best time of 45.33, while Gabriel Fantoni earned the No. 5 seed with a PR of 45.75. Defending Big Ten champion in the event Vini Lanza also qualified with a mark of 45.79, while freshman Van Mathias also made it with a career-best time of 45.91.
Corey Gamberdella will swim in the C Final after touching the wall with a personal-best time of 47.16.
400 IM
Freshman Mikey Calvillo had a career-best showing in the prelims of the 400 IM, qualifying for the Championship Final with a personal-best time of 3:47.02.
Both Spencer Lehman (3:47.58) and Matthew Jerden (3:48.45, PR) will represent the Hoosiers in the B Final of the 400 IM.
200 Freestyle
Senior Zach Apple earned the top-seed for the Championship Final of the 200 freestyle, posting a time of 1:33.90. Joining him will be Mohamed Samy, who touched the wall in 1:33.90 to earn the No. 4 seed for the A Final.
Freshman Jakub Karl (1:35.41, PR) and Griffin Eiber (1:35.77, PR) will swim in the B Final, while Thomas Vanderbrook (1:36.15) and Jack Franzman will compete in the C Final of the 200 free.
100 Breaststroke
All four Hoosiers qualified for Friday night finals in the 100 breaststroke, including three in the Championship Final.
Ian Finnerty had a great showing, earning the top-seed overall with a NCAA A cut and Big Ten Meet record time of 50.60. Freshman Zane Backes posted a PR of 52.42 to earn a spot in the A Final, while Gary Kostbade also notched a spot with a career-best mark of 52.55.
Matthew Jerden qualified for his second B Final on the day, posting a PR of 52.80.
100 Backstroke
IU earned the top-two seeds in the Championship Final of the 100 backstroke and qualified three overall for the A Final.
Gabriel Fantoni earned the No. 1 seed with a time of 45.46, while Jacob Steele will be the No. 2 seed after going a PR of 46.24.
Mohamed Samy qualified for his second Championship Final on the day, posting a time of 46.57. Wilson Beckman will swim in the B Final after touching the wall with a time of 47.14.
3-Meter Dive
For the second-straight day, James Connor and Andrew Capobianco earned the top-two seeds for a Championship Final. Connor earned the No. 1 seed in the 3-meter dive with a score of 460.30, while Capobianco took the No. 2 seed with a total of 452.30.
Cole VanDevender will dive in the B Final after posting a personal-best score of 373.05. Mory Gould also scored points for the Hoosiers, taking 19th place overall with a score of 333.65.
The 2019 Men's Big Ten Championships continue on Friday evening with the finals of the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter dive and 200 freestyle relay. Action gets underway at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium at 7:30 p.m. ET.
