Indiana’s Ron Helmer Named USTFCCCA Great Lakes Coach of the Year

NEW ORLEANS, La.— The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced their annual regional awards for the 2019 Indoor track & field season on Friday afternoon. For fourth time in his career, Head Coach Ron Helmer was named the Men's Coach of the Year in the Great Lakes Region.
In the USTFCCCA weekly ratings index, the men's team was ranked as high as No. 10 in the country this season. They have steadily been ranked No. 11 the past two weeks. In the Great Lakes Region, the Hoosiers have had control of the top spot since week No. 1.
Helmer has coached eight individuals and two DMR squads to national qualifying marks this season to earn 11 entries into the 2019 Indoor Track & Field Championships. This is most since the 2010 season when the Hoosiers had 14 entries.
At Big Ten Championships last weekend, Helmer saw four individual champions and two second place team finishes. On the women's side, their runners up title was the highest finish ever in the 12 seasons of the Helmer era. Eric Bethea (triple jump), Adam Coulon (pole vault), Ben Veatch (3000m), and Jenna Jungels (long lump) were all Big Ten Champions in their respective events.
Next up, Helmer will take a group of Hoosiers to the NCAA Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Alabama- Birmingham and the City of Birmingham. The championships are set to for Mar. 8 & 9.
