Indiana Downs Canisius Behind Saalfrank's 14 Strikeouts

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (11-8) earned a 12-1 victory over Canisius on Sunday afternoon to earn the four-game series sweep. The Hoosiers were led by junior starting pitcher Andrew Saalfrank, who fanned 14 hitters, the most for an IU pitcher since 2000.
KEY MOMENTS
• Indiana manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Matt Gorski and sophomore Drew Ashley each drew walks and stole three combined bases, resulting in a sac fly from senior Matt Lloyd and an RBI single from freshman Tyler Van Pelt.
• Sophomore Cole Barr hit his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the second, a solo shot, to make it a 3-0 game.
• After allowing a Canisius run in the third, the Hoosiers answered back with an eight-spot. The scoring started with a two-run double from senior Ryan Fineman. Following an RBI single from freshman Grant Richardson, sophomore Drew Ashley knocked out his first career grand slam to give Indiana an 11-1 lead.
• Fineman knocked out a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to up the lead to 12 runs.
NOTES
• The 14 strikeouts for Saalfrank marked the most for an Indiana pitcher since Zach McClellan had 14 against Vermont on March 18, 2000.
• The junior left hander went seven innings, allowing five hits and one run with the 14 strikeouts and two walks.
• Ashley finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI, three runs and a stolen base.
• Fineman went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
• Junior Cal Krueger tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and no runs with two strikeouts.
