BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men's soccer team will travel to Mexico City from March 8-16 to play two matches, as well as participate in many cultural experiences.
The team, which is traveling to Mexico City as part of activities organized by Indiana University's Mexico Gateway office, will face the UNAM University team on Thursday, March 14, at the legendary Estadio Olimpico Universitario at 7:00 p.m. ET.
The Estadio Olimpico Universitario, located on UNAM's main campus, hosted the 1968 Summer Olympics as well as four matches of the 1986 World Cup. The match will be open to the public. IU will also face the Cruz Azul U-20 team earlier in the week in a match closed to the public.
The IU Mexico Gateway, the university's fourth such facility around the world, is located at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, or UNAM, the largest university in Latin America, the oldest in North America and a leading university of the Spanish-speaking world. UNAM is also one of only a few university campuses in the world designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Indiana University men's soccer team is one of the most successful programs in the history of the NCAA, making the College Cup the past two seasons. IU finished the past two seasons ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, the last two years and have won eight NCAA Championships in their history.
The Hoosiers have a great history of facing the Mexico Youth National teams in Bloomington during the spring. Facing off against U-18, U-19 and U-20 teams in years past, the annual matches draw thousands of Hoosier and Mexican fans to Armstrong Stadium.
The IU Mexico Gateway is designed to strengthen and broaden IU's global engagement by facilitating support for research and teaching; conferences and workshops; study abroad opportunities for students; and engagement with alumni, businesses and nongovernmental organizations.
Along with the two matches, the Hoosiers will also participate in many cultural experiences during the trip. The men's soccer team will attend the America and Puebla match at Azteca
Stadium on Saturday, March 9. On Wednesday, March 13, the team will get an exclusive tour of TV Azteca thanks in part to a generous Indiana University alum who set up the tour for the Hoosiers. To close the week, the Hoosiers will take a tour of the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacan.
During the trip, the team's activities will be covered by a small group of students from the Sports Media program at IU's Media School. These students will produce audio, video, and written coverage about all aspects of the trip, and will publish much of that content via social media as the trip progresses. The contingent of students will be led by Dr. Galen Clavio, associate professor of sports media and director of the National Sports Journalism Center at IU.
The university currently has 10,000 Latino alumni, including nearly 550 who are affiliated with Mexico and contribute to a thriving Mexico alumni chapter that Indiana University president Michael McRobbie helped inaugurate during a trip to that country in 2016.
McRobbie, who will attend the March 14 game at UNAM, also led a university delegation to Mexico last May, the first by an IU president to Mexico since 1980, to, among other activities, formally dedicate the IU Mexico Gateway, strengthen IU's two-decades-old relationship with UNAM and seek educational and research opportunities for IU faculty and students.
More than 350 IU students currently study abroad in Latin America, where IU's successful overseas study programs originated.
Additionally, according to data gathered by the IU Public Policy Institute, Latinos are the fastest-growing and youngest minority population in the state of Indiana. More than 429,000 Latinos live in Indiana, 75 percent of whom are of Mexican origin.
