Bloomington, Ind. – Indiana University water polo junior Emily Powell found herself diving deeper into her academic pursuit for excellence as she attended an international networking event at the third annual Pass the Torch for Women Foundation breakfast.
Pass the Torch for Women is a community of developing professionals, college students and established executive females that come together to help guide other women through their career, academic and athletic pathways by providing a variety of mentoring and networking opportunities. They focus on building equally represented opportunities for women across all levels of leadership platforms in any and all organizations.
Powell was invited to attend this year's International Women's Day breakfast on Friday, March 8 at the NCAA Hall of Champions by Australian Consul General Jo Christopherson. During her time at the event, Powell had the opportunity to personally meet with Consul General Christopherson to discuss future pathways in her academic career as well as gain a stronger insight to the relationship between different sport and career avenues.
Here is what Powell had to say on the topic:
"It was interesting for me meeting Jo Christopherson because we were talking a lot about sports diplomacy. Their work at the moment is focusing a lot on the connection between Australia and the states, and creating a better pathway for athletes to come across. She was saying how valuable it is to have this experience of training athletically in the U.S. while gaining an education because it is a growing field. A lot more athletes are coming over and they're trying to develop ways for Americans to go to Australia as well and increase the efficiency of the pathway and the emerging field of sports diplomacy."
Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs recently released the new 'Sports Diplomacy 2030' strategy detailing the countries plans for increasing closer collaboration between Australian sports codes and the international sport industries.
Powell went on to say, "I just thought it was interesting learning the exposure to the topic of sports diplomacy. I thought I would kind of end sport after my four years. Obviously I'm still going to play, but it would just be quite separate from my academics. I never thought I could use the lessons I've learned and the experiences I've had in sports in my career path. It was good to develop those connections with her because it sounded like a really interesting field and then using sport in developing countries as a way to promote negotiation and connections as another method of communication is just really interesting."
The interaction between Powell and Consul General Christopherson acted much more than just a conversation as it contributed significant insight to emerging opportunities for Powell upon her graduation here at Indiana University.
Powell explained, "It definitely sparked an interest because I'm still trying to find exactly what I want to do with an interest in law. I don't want to just be in a court room, so when she brought up sports diplomacy and what they're working on in their office it just seemed like something that would be interesting to try."
By attending this event, Powell was able to acquire a new perspective on the relationship between her athletic and academic successes giving her better insight for her future endeavors.
