Hoosiers Split Doubleheader with Purdue
4/10/2019 11:45:00 PM | Softball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball split a midweek doubleheader with Purdue, earning a 2-1 win in the first game before falling in the second in nine innings, 5-4.
Game One: Indiana 2, Purdue 1
KEY MOMENTS
• Two first-inning runs would prove to be enough for the Hoosiers in the game-one win.
• After sophomore Taylor Lambert knocked a two-out single up the middle, she showcased her speed as she came home on a double to left center from sophomore Maddie Westmoreland.
• Junior Katie Lacefield doubled the Indiana lead on a single, plating freshman pinch runner Paige Chitwood.
• The Boilermakers cut the IU lead in half in the sixth as Jenny Behan hit a solo homer to left, but Purdue would get no closer as senior pitcher Tara Trainer retired five of the next six Boilermakers she faced.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Trainer earned her 20th win of the year, tossing her 12th complete game of the season and striking out nine while surrendering just four hits. Trainer became the first IU pitcher since 2011's Morgan Melloh to hit 20 wins on a season and become just the 10th Hoosier in IU history to do so.
• Westmoreland led the Indiana bats with a pair of base hits, extending her reached base streak to 13 games.
• Aside from Lambert, sophomore Grayson Radcliffe and juniors Katie Lacefield and Bella Norton each picked up a hit.
• Indiana's 29 wins marks the most victories in a season since a 29-25 finish in 2016.
Game Two: Purdue 5, Indiana 4 (9 inn.)
KEY MOMENTS
• The bats of both teams were quiet to start the second game as neither team put up a hit until the fourth inning.
• Wednesday's nightcap again saw the Hoosiers take the lead first, putting up four runs in the fifth inning. After Norton singled to lead off the inning, pinch runner Juvia Davis was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Annika Baez. Davis then stole third before senior Sarah Galovich walked then stole second to put two in scoring position. A throwing error on a squeeze from freshman Tete Hart plated Davis before a sacrifice fly from Radcliffe brought in Galovich. Junior Gabbi Jenkins then laid down a bunt single to make it 3-0 and score Hart before she came home on a double down the right field line by Lambert.
• However, Purdue began chipping away at the lead in the sixth, getting on the board on a single to center by Kasey Wilhoit. A second run came across on an IU fielding error before an RBI groundout by Kaitlynn Moody made it a one-run contest.
• The Boilermakers tied the game in the seventh on a solo homer from Behan.
• IU looked to answer immediately as Hart walked then stole second before reaching third on a throwing error to start the bottom of the seventh, but she was stranded.
• The winning run for Purdue came on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Lexi Huffman in the top of the ninth.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Norton collected a pair of hits in the loss, while Jenkins and Lambert registered the other two.
• Westmoreland's reached base streak came to an end at 13 games.
• Indiana's eight stolen bases were just one shy of the season-high set against Saint Francis on March 17.
• Trainer took the loss, as she went 2.2 innings in relief. Purdue's Sydney Bates earned a complete game win.
• Indiana moves to 29-14 on the season and 4-7 in Big Ten while Purdue is now 28-15 with a 5-6 conference mark.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"In game one, I thought Tara pitched great – she had the nine K's. It was nice for us to jump out early and get the 2-0 lead then we were able to hang on to the one-run ballgame which is great to see that we can be in a tight game and come away with it. In game two, we had to stay the course. I thought Bates for them did a nice job and you had to go to what we do well, which is our grittiness and our base-running and the small ball. We ended up being able to score four runs in that inning without hitting the ball out of the infield. I would have liked to not let that ballgame slip away but it did and you have to give credit to Purdue."
