BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball picked up an 8-0 five-inning victory against Maryland on Friday evening, capped by an RBI pinch-hit single from freshman Brittany Ford to run-rule the Terrapins.
KEY MOMENTS
• Indiana struck in the opening inning as sophomore Maddie Westmoreland hit a one-out two-run single to right field, plating sophomore Grayson Radcliffe and junior Gabbi Jenkins.
• IU added three more runs in the second as the Hoosiers loaded the bases on a fielding error, single by freshman Tete Hart and a walk to sophomore Taylor Lambert. All three runners were brought home on a bases-clearing double from Radcliffe.
• The sixth Hoosier run of the game came across in the fourth as a throw on a groundball from Westmoreland was off the mark, allowing Jenkins to score.
• IU again loaded the bases in the fifth inning on walks to juniors Katie Lacefield and Bella Norton as well as sophomore Annika Baez with no outs. Lacefield made it 7-0 as she came home on a fielder's choice before Ford delivered a single down the right field line, bringing in sophomore pinch runner Karly Combs and ending the game early.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Senior Tara Trainer earned the victory in the circle, as she went 4.0 innings and allowed five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. She is now 21-7 on the season and tied Mariangee Bogado's 21-10 campaign in 2006 as the eighth-most wins in a single year at IU.
• Redshirt junior Josie Wood tossed the final inning, picking up a strikeout.
• The at-bat for Brittany Ford was her first official one at Andy Mohr Field. She also had a plate appearance on March 17 against Saint Francis, drawing a walk.
• In her first career at-bat in an Indiana uniform, Ford also picked up a single in a pinch-hit performance on March 8 against Seton Hall in Clearwater, Fla.
• Radcliffe collected a pair of hits and three RBI to lead the IU bats.
• Indiana stole four bases on the night, bringing the season total to 115, the second-most in program history. The most is 120 set in 1987.
• The victory is the fourth run-rule win of the season for Indiana and the second in Big Ten action.
• At 30-14, the 2019 team is the first Hoosier squad to reach 30 wins on a season since 2012. Indiana improves its Big Ten record to 5-7. Maryland is now 18-20 on the year with a 2-8 conference mark.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"We got a great start out of Tara and we felt Josie looked great when she came in – had a lot of pop on the ball and pounded the zone. Grayson played very well defensively then clutched up on the bases-clearing double. One of the greatest things we love as coaches is to be able to watch a kid have her moment. Brittany Ford really clutched up there and it was nice to see her smile coming around second, way to drive in the game-ending walk-off run."
UP NEXT
Due to the projected weather forecast, Indiana and Maryland will now wrap-up the series with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Both games will be on BTN Plus and admission is free.
