NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Indiana Softball senior Tara Trainer was selected by the Aussie Peppers with the 21st overall pick in the 2019 National Pro Fastpitch College Draft, which was held on Monday evening.
Trainer becomes the fourth Hoosier to be selected in the draft and the first since pitcher Morgan Melloh was picked seventh overall by the Carolina Diamonds in 2011. In addition to Melloh, Trainer joins former Hoosier Tory Yamaguchi, who was picked in 2008 by the PA Force as the 21st overall selection and Stormy Hanson, who was drafted ahead of the inaugural season for the NPF in 2004.
The Lebanon, Ohio native has her name near the top of every pitching category in the Indiana records books, including ranking second in career strikeouts behind Amy Unterbrink with 767. Trainer's 64 career victories rank fourth all-time, while her 159 appearances are second in IU history and her 123 career starts is third.
This season, Trainer is carrying a 1.81 ERA with a 22-7 mark, becoming the first Indiana pitcher since Melloh to turn in a 20-plus win season. Trainer has fanned 195 batters, already good for 11th most in a single year. In addition, Trainer now owns four of the top-12 spots in single season strikeout rankings at Indiana.
Trainer is a two-time All-Big Ten and NFCA All-Region selection and off-the-field, has twice been named Academic All-Big Ten. In addition, Trainer was named a Top 30 candidate for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award.
The Aussie Peppers are based in Minnesota and are in their second year in the NPF.
