QUOTABLE
"Today, my short game really saved me. I was able to read the greens well and chip it close when I missed the green. My confidence in my wedge game was high today, so I was never panicked when I missed the green. My mindset was to stay present and focused on each shot. I tried to never get ahead of myself." – Graduate student Kari Bellville, who is tied for the lead after the first round
CHIP-INS
• With the weather in the low 50s, a wind out of the north and a steady light rain for most of the round, the Indian women's golf team was able to get out on the course first and post a team score of 294 (+6) to tie for second place with Ohio State. Illinois leads the team leaderboard after a 291 in round one.
• Graduate transfer Kari Bellville, coming off a T13 finish last week at the Lady Boilermaker Classic, is part of a three-person tie for first place at 1-under par after an opening round 71. She was 2-over par after her first four holes, but played the final 14 holes in 3-under par to surge back to the top.
• Sophomore Mary Parsons is tied for fourth place at Even par following her 72 in round one. She bogeyed her second hole, but then rattled off three consecutive birdies to get to 2-under par and the moved to three-under par after a birdie on No. 8. However, she played the final 10 holes 3-over par.
• Parsons 5 birdies in round one are tied for the most in the field.
• Senior Erin Harper opened her final round with nine straight pars before a birdie on No. 1 put her in red numbers. After a bogey on No. 15 and a double bogey on 18, she is tied for 14th at 2-over par after round one.
• Freshman Alexis Miestowski is tied for 41st at 5-over par, but that doesn't reflect how she played in her first appearance at the Big Ten Championships. After opening with a triple bogey on her first hole, she played the rest of the front nine at Even par. Then she started the back nine with a birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie combination to get back to just one-over par. However, two more bogeys and a double bogey put her at 5-over for the round.
• Sophomore Angela Aung is tied for 54th at 7-over par after opening with a 79 on Friday.
• Priscilla Schmid also got off to a tough start, posting a triple bogey on No. 3 and a bogey on No. 4, on her way to a round of 85 and a tie for 81st.
