BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored its student-athletes at the ninth-annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase on Monday, April 22, at the Indiana University Auditorium.
The Showcase honored student-athletes with year-end awards from 2018 and 2019. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Spirit of Indiana Director's Award, given by Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass to two student-athletes that best represent The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, 1 Team.
"We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of all our students who have represented Indiana University so well both on and off the field during the last year," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "Our annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase is an event that offers the opportunity for all of us to come together, in the spirit of our mission of 24 Sports, One Team, to highlight and celebrate those achievements."
This year's honorees for the Director's Award are Maddie Pierce (Women's Rowing) and James Connor (Men's Diving).

Academically, Pierce has succeeded at a high level. She boasts a 3.97 GPA while majoring in Speech and Hearing Sciences. She's earned Academic All-Big Ten and All-America accolades, and was recently inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, the oldest and one of the most prestigious academic organizations in the country.
Maddie has also taken a leadership role in countless student organizations. She has spent three years as an Executive Board member of SAAC, and traveled to Vietnam through the Coach for College Program as a freshman. Emerging Leaders, Servant Leaders, Hoosier Heroes, and IU Dance Marathon are all groups and organizations that Maddie has been actively involved during the last four years. she's also helped the IU Rowing program earn three straight NCAA Championship invitations and finish ranked in the nation's top 15 each season.
James Connor capped his terrific Indiana career this season by winning the Big Ten titles in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, earning Diver of the Championships honors. One of the best divers in IU history, Connor is the school-record holder on the platform and owns 11 spots on the school's top-10 lists across all three diving events. A two-time Olympian for Australia, James leaves Bloomington a four-time Big Ten Champion, eight-time All-American and two-time Big Ten Diver of the Championships.
A Neuroscience major, Connor is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a two-time Academic All-American. He's active in a number of student organizations through IU Athletics, including the Athletic Director's Council on Diversity and Inclusivity as well as the Hoosier Heroes Peer Mentor program.
"Maddie and James have each had enormous impacts on the success of their respective programs and on countless individuals because of their involvement in important departmental and campus organizations," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "The Spirit of Indiana Director's Award recognizes not only their athletic excellence, but also their successes in the classroom and involvement in the university community. Both have embraced those opportunities and excelled, and each is a very deserving recipient of this year's award."
The department also recognized the Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients. The award is given to a person who strives for excellence in both athletics and academics.
The Big Ten, the nation's oldest collegiate conference, commemorates the 105th anniversary of a very unique tradition - the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The conference's most exclusive award was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The Big Ten Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1915 to one student-athlete from the graduating class of each university who had "attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work." Big Ten schools currently feature almost 9,500 student-athletes, but only 28 earn this prestigious award on an annual basis. In the 105 years of the Medal of Honor, over 1,400 student-athletes have earned this distinction.
The women's honoree this year is Jessica Parratto (Women's Diving) and the men's honoree Juwan Morgan (Men's Basketball).

Parratto was a dynamic force for the Hoosiers during her career in Bloomington, winning five Big Ten titles, the 2015 NCAA title in the platform and earning 10 All-America accolades. Parratto went out in style in the 2019 Big Ten Championships, winning the platform crown, earning Diver of the Championships honors and helping IU win the Big Ten team title. A 2016 Rio Olympian for Team USA, Parratto leaves IU as the school-record holder on the platform and owns 10 spots on the school's top-10 lists across all three diving events.
A two-time All-Big Ten performer, Morgan averaged 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds and led the team with 54 blocked shots and 41 steals. He finished 9th in the league in scoring, 5th in rebounds and 7th in field goal percentage and blocked shots. The Waynesville, Mo. native recently completed a stellar four-year career which saw him finish 24th in career scoring at IU with 1,374 points, 10th in rebounds with 757, 4th in career field goal percentage at 56.2% and 8th in blocked shots.
