ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Despite a pair of solo home runs from sophomore Maddie Westmoreland, Indiana dropped a 3-2 pitchers duel to No. 23 Michigan on Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 2,490 at Wilpon Complex.
KEY MOMENTS
• Sophomore shortstop Grayson Radcliffe made an impressive grab to end the second inning, as she jumped to her left to rob the Wolverines of a base hit.
• However, Michigan would get on the board in the third as Faith Canfield sent an RBI single up the middle, plating Grace Chelemen. A second Wolverine came across two batters later on a sacrifice fly from Lexie Blair to bring Natalia Rodriguez home.
• Indiana put a pair of baserunners on in the fourth as junior Bella Norton and Radcliffe each drew two-out walks, forcing Michigan to go to the bullpen and bring in Meghan Beaubien. However, she forced a groundout to strand the runners.
• A solo home run by Michigan's Madison Uden extended the Wolverines' lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
• Westmoreland responded with a solo shot of her own in the fifth, marking the first IU hit of the day and bringing Indiana within 3-1.
• Michigan led off the bottom of the fifth with a pair of singles, but senior Tara Trainer picked up three straight outs to strand the runners.
• Westmoreland's second homer of the game came in the seventh as she knocked a solo shot to cut the Michigan lead to 3-2 with two outs. Senior Sarah Galovich was hit by a pitch to continue the game before a strikeout ended it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Saturday marked the first multi-homer game of Westmoreland's career and she now has five home runs on the season.
• Westmoreland extended her reached base streak to 11 games and the sophomore has now had at least one base hit in eight of the last nine games with 12 total hits in that stretch.
• Trainer took the loss in the circle, but had a solid outing as she tossed a complete game and surrendered just six hits.
• Beaubien earned the win for Michigan as she went 3.1 innings in relief.
• Indiana fell to 28-12 on the season and 3-5 in conference while Michigan improved to 26-10 and 8-0 in Big Ten.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"It was awesome to see Maddie have her day today with the two bombs. There's a lot of little things that our kids are doing well. In the inning they scored twice, we had a walk and didn't make a play on a bunt so that opened it up for a good team to capitalize on. You have to be that much sharper any time you go up against a Top-25 team but I'm really impressed with how we're battling this weekend. This is what college softball is about – a gorgeous day, a sellout crowd, two teams battling hard and two great pitchers in the circle."
