BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis program has added Alexandra Staiculescu, ranked as high as No. 9 in the Romanian junior rankings and No. 35 in the Romanian senior rankings, IU head coach Ramiro Azcui announced on Wednesday.
Staiculescu (Bucharest, Romania) has a current UTR of 10.75 and has achieved a career-high of 11.29 (August 2018), making her the highest rated recruit for the Indiana women's tennis program since the creation of the UTR.
"Alexandra is one of the top junior players in Romania and has extensive ITF junior and professional level tournament experience," Azcui said. "On the court, Alexandra is a fierce competitor, a great mover and possesses a highly developed skillset. We have no doubt Alexandra will make a great impact for us on the court right out of the gate."
Alexandra was a part of two Romanian U18 National Team Championships (2017, 2018) and has a career-high WTA professional ranking of 1187 in singles and 1071 in doubles.
"In addition, Alexandra is a strong student and will graduate from one of the top high schools in Romania," Azcui said. "Her commitment to both academic and athletic excellence will make her a strong fit for our program."
Staiculescu's intended major at Indiana University will be Physics or Mathematics.
