BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – IU head coach Angel Escobedo and his staff are already making a big impact on the recruiting trail and have been recognized with a No. 16 ranking.
The Hoosiers come in at No. 16 in the ranking on The Open Mat. They are sixth among Big Ten teams in that ranking and No. 1 among all Indiana teams in the ranking.
"It is great to see our recruiting class get recognized as a top-20 recruiting class in the country," IU head coach Angel Escobedo said. "Hoosier Nation should be really excited about these young men. We as a staff are very optimistic that they will help elevate this program to a new level!"
Here is that they are saying about the class from The Open Mat ranking release.
Head Coach Angel Escobedo's first full recruiting class with his alma mater Hoosiers is one to remember. It has to be the best and deepest in some time for an Indiana team that has struggled to be competitive in the Big Ten, prior to Escobedo's arrival. Not only did Indiana keep the best of their talent at home (Garcia, Moran, South), they also raided some of their conference rivals (Illinois, Ohio, and Iowa) as well.
Garcia, Moran, and South are all multiple-time state champions, in Indiana's one class system. Ortiz wasn't able to compete in the high school season due to eligibility issues, but he was a 2018 state champion and a seventh-place finisher at the Super 32. Baughman has placed in the top-five in each of the last three years in some brutal Ohio state weight classes. Hagan was another future Hoosier that did not wrestle in the high school postseason; however, he was an Iowa state finalist as a junior. Washington is a recruit that always seems to find his way into the top eight at national-level events. He was sixth at the Super 32 and a Fargo Junior Greco finalist. It will be interesting to track how the Indiana staff handles this class. There are three or four recruits that could probably start as true freshmen, but who knows how Escobedo and crew feel about throwing them into the fire.
The Hoosiers 2019 Class
#66 Matt Ortiz (Montini Catholic, IL) 174
#88 Asa Garcia (Avon, IN) 133
#92 Luke Baughman (Wadsworth, OH) 149
