LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Indiana Softball saw two earn NFCA All-Midwest Region honors on Thursday as senior pitcher Tara Trainer earned First Team accolades and sophomore designated player Maddie Westmoreland earned Second Team Honors.
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions with first, second and third-team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for the 2019 NFCA Division I All-America squads.
Trainer earns All-Region honors for the third time in her career, including back-to-back First Team selections. The Lebanon, Ohio native leaves the program as one of the most decorated pitchers in IU history. On top of being a two-time All-Big Ten pick, Trainer became just the fourth Hoosier to be drafted in the National Pro Fastpitch league when she was selected 21st overall by the Aussie Peppers on April 15. This season, Trainer posted career-best numbers with a 1.82 ERA, 231 strikeouts and a 26-11 record. Trainer graduates second all-time in strikeouts (803), appearances (170) and games started (130). In addition, she is third in career wins (68) and innings pitched (742.0) and fourth in shutouts (19). Trainer is the first Hoosier since Monica Armendarez (1997-98) to earn back-to-back First Team honors. In addition, she's also the first since Armendarez to earn All-Region accolades three times in her career.
Westmoreland earns her second straight All-Region selection after leading the Hoosiers with a .315 average at the plate. The Glendale, Ariz. native knocked eight homers on the year and added 41 hits, 24 RBI, 14 runs and 15 walks. Westmoreland was named First Team All-Big Ten last week for the second straight season after posting an impressive .391 average with six home runs in conference action.
Indiana is coming off one of its most successful campaigns in recent years, finishing 36-21, which is the most victories since 2011. In addition, the Hoosiers spent six straight weeks ranked in the NFCA Coach Poll and set a program record with its 14-0 start to the season.
