BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer unveiled its 2019 schedule on Monday, the first under head coach Erwin van Bennekom. The Hoosiers will play 18 total games, including seven against 2018 NCAA Tournament teams and eight against teams ranked or receiving votes in the final United Soccer Coaches Poll of the season.
"We put together a non-conference schedule that will help us develop and challenge us right from the start," said van Bennekom. "We will face some very good teams with a wide variety of playing styles, all of which will help prepare our team for Big Ten play. We anticipate that the conference will again be one of the top in the country and every game will be a battle. We're excited about this first season under our staff and looking forward to officially starting this new chapter for the program."
The Hoosiers will first play a pair of exhibition contests at Bill Armstrong Stadium – Aug. 10 against Indiana State and Aug. 14 versus Northwestern.
Indiana's non-conference slate features seven games with three of those coming against NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago. The Hoosiers will officially open the 2019 campaign against North Carolina in Chapel Hill (Aug. 22). The Tarheels are coming off their 25th appearance in the NCAA Championship as North Carolina fell to Florida State in the title game. UNC finished the year 21-4-2 and winners of the ACC regular season. The Tarheels have won both previous meetings against the Hoosiers. IU will open its home slate against UIC (Aug. 25) in its first-ever meeting with the Flames.
The following week will see the Hoosiers travel to Louisville for a Thursday battle against the Cardinals (Sept. 5), who received an at-large big to last year's NCAA Tournament after posting a 12-7 mark. IU then returns home for a Sunday afternoon game as the Hoosiers face Morehead State (Sept. 8) for the first time in program history.
Indiana will head to UT-Martin (Sept. 12) for another contest against a first-time opponent in the Skyhawks, who went 15-3-1 and won the OVC last season. IU will finish out the non-conference slate with a Sunday visit to Kentucky (Sept. 15).
The Big Ten portion of the schedule opens at Armstrong Stadium with weekend tilts against Iowa (Sept. 20) and Nebraska (Sept. 22), who ended the season by receiving votes in the Coaches Poll. IU will then travel north to face Michigan State (Sept. 27) and Michigan (Sept. 29). The Hoosiers won both of those meetings last year at home, including a thrilling double overtime victory against the Wolverines.
Indiana will travel to Champaign, Ill. for a Thursday night contest at Illinois (Oct. 3), who finished No. 50 in the RPI and with votes in the Coaches Poll. IU returns home to Armstrong Stadium on Sunday to host Minnesota (Oct. 6), who captured the Big Ten Tournament title and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
The following weekend sees the Hoosiers host two more NCAA Tournament participants in Penn State (Oct. 10) and Ohio State (Oct. 13). The Nittany Lions won the outright Big Ten title last season and lost to eventual champion Florida State in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. Ohio State, who Indiana did not face during the 2018 regular season, finished their season with a No. 48 RPI spot and fell to Wake Forest in the First Round of the tournament.
IU's final road weekend of the conference season comes with a trip to Maryland (Oct. 17) and Rutgers (Oct. 20). It's the second straight year IU has played in College Park, while the visit to Piscataway is the first since 2015. Rutgers finished the year with an RPI of 35 and lost to van Bennekom's previous school Duke in the NCAA Tournament First Round.
The 2019 regular season will conclude at Armstrong Stadium with the Golden Boot Game against Purdue (Oct. 27).
