
Hoosiers Set to Host Big Ten Softball Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Andy Mohr Field is home to the 2019 Big Ten Softball Tournament from May 9-11. No. 7 seeded Indiana (35-20, 10-13 Big Ten) opens up play in the first round against No. 10 seeded Penn State (24-31, 7-16 Big Ten). First pitch of the matchup is scheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Every game of the tournament will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network. Dean Linke and Jennie Ritter will have the call for Thursday's action between IU and Penn State. Lisa Byington and Carol Bruggeman will call the early session games. In addition, Sam Neidermann will be on the mic for a free radio broadcast, available on IUHoosiers.com.
SCOUTING PENN STATE
This will be the fourth time in a row Indiana and Penn State have met after they played last weekend in the final series of the season. The Hoosiers won the first two games before falling in the finale. The series was mostly a pitchers duel between Indiana's Tara Trainer and Penn State's Bailey Parshall. Trainer collected a 0.51 ERA with a pair of wins and 17 strikeouts in the series. Parshall earned a shutout win in the final game Sunday. Penn State is batting .264 as a team, led by Toni Polk (.324, 58 hits, 45 runs, 13 HR) and Chelsi Bisi (.319, 46 hits, 17 runs and 37 RBI. In the circle, the Nittany Lions have posted a 3.51 ERA. Parshall (3.11 ERA, 11-16, 166.1 IP) has carried most of the workload, while Kylee Lingenfelter (3.04 ERA, 9-4, 83.0 IP) and Hannah Shields (4.57 ERA, 2-7, 69.0 IP) have seen significant time as well.
IU leads the all-times series against Penn State, 42-29. Last time the teams played at Andy Mohr Field, the Hoosiers swept the series in 2018. Trainer earned all three wins in the circle and recorded her second career no-hitter in the final game. At the plate, Maddie Westmoreland batted .857 with nine RBI and a pair of homers. Gabbi Jenkins also had an impressive showing as she batted .750 with six hits and six runs.

• Indiana is 5-11 all-time at the tournament. Last season, the Hoosiers advanced to the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals for the first time since 2006.
• IU and Penn State have never met in the Big Ten Tournament.
THREE EARN ALL-BIG TEN HONORS
• The Big Ten announced its yearly honors on Wednesday as the Hoosiers placed three on all-conference teams, as voted by the Big Ten's head coaches. Sophomore Maddie Westmoreland earned First Team honors for the second year in a row, while senior Tara Trainer and sophomore Grayson Radcliffe were named to the Second Team.
Westmoreland is leading the team with a .320 average, including an impressive .391 clip in Big Ten play. The Glendale, Ariz. native has knocked eight home runs on the season with six of those coming in conference action. The designated player has registered 40 hits, 23 RBI and 14 runs while also drawing 15 walks on the year. Westmoreland is the first Hoosier to earn back-to-back First Team honors since Monica Armendarez did so in 1997-98.
For the second straight season, Trainer earns a spot on the All-Big Ten squad. The Second Team selection has had a career year for the Hoosiers, registering a 1.79 ERA with 225 strikeouts and 25 wins, all career highs. Trainer is near the top of nearly every category in the IU record books, including second in career strikeouts (797), victories (67), appearances (168) and games started (128). In addition, she became just the fourth Hoosier to be drafted into the National Pro Fastpitch league when she was selected 21st overall by the Aussie Peppers on April 15.
Radcliffe earns her first Big Ten accolade as the sophomore transfer has played every game at shortstop for the Hoosiers and leads the team with nine home runs. In conference play, Radcliffe has batted .333 with 20 hits, 19 runs, 19 RBI and five homers. In addition, Radcliffe was announced as the team's Sportsmanship Award winner, which is given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
HOOSIERS SET PROGRAM STOLEN BASE RECORD
• The Hoosiers have set a new program record for single-season stolen bases, swiping 137 bags on the year. The previous high of 120 set in 1987.
• Indiana has nearly double the stolen bases of any other Big Ten team as Nebraska is the next closest with 74.
• The Hoosiers' 137 stolen bases is currently the third-most ever by a Big Ten team. IU is closing on the record of 144 set by Purdue in 2010.
• Nationally, Indiana ranks fourth in both total stolen bases and in stolen bases per game average (2.49).
• Junior Gabbi Jenkins, sophomore Taylor Lambert and freshman Tete Hart lead Indiana on the basepaths with 21 stolen bases apiece. For her career, Jenkins has 60 stolen bases, which is sixth most in program history.
HOME COOKING
• IU is 11-5 at Andy Mohr Field this season, including 8-3 in Big Ten play.
• At home, the Hoosiers are batting .326 compared to a .242 average away from Andy Mohr Field.
