ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten announced its yearly honors on Wednesday as the Hoosiers placed three on all-conference teams, as voted by the Big Ten's head coaches. Sophomore Maddie Westmoreland earned First Team honors for the second year in a row, while senior Tara Trainer and sophomore Grayson Radcliffe were named to the Second Team.
Westmoreland is leading the team with a .320 average, including an impressive .391 clip in Big Ten play. The Glendale, Ariz. native has knocked eight home runs on the season with six of those coming in conference action. The designated player has registered 40 hits, 23 RBI and 14 runs while also drawing 15 walks on the year. Westmoreland is the first Hoosier to earn back-to-back First Team honors since Monica Armendarez did so in 1997-98.
For the second straight season, Trainer earns a spot on the All-Big Ten squad. The Second Team selection has had a career year for the Hoosiers, registering a 1.79 ERA with 225 strikeouts and 25 wins, all career highs. Trainer is near the top of nearly every category in the IU record books, including second in career strikeouts (797), victories (67), appearances (168) and games started (128). In addition, she became just the fourth Hoosier to be drafted into the National Pro Fastpitch league when she was selected 21st overall by the Aussie Peppers on April 15.
Radcliffe earns her first Big Ten accolade as the sophomore transfer has played every game at shortstop for the Hoosiers and leads the team with nine home runs. In conference play, Radcliffe has batted .333 with 20 hits, 19 runs, 19 RBI and five homers. In addition, Radcliffe was announced as the team's Sportsmanship Award winner, which is given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
