BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer head coach Erwin van Bennekom announced IU alum and former graduate student manager Emily Basten as the team's volunteer assistant coach on Tuesday.
Basten has served as the program's graduate student manager for the last two seasons as she pursued her Master's Degree from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Basten is an alum of the program as she transferred to Indiana from Central Michigan for her senior season in 2015, playing every game on the Hoosier backline and earning the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship award. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Indiana in Neuroscience and spent a year working for the IU Varsity Club as the Annual Giving and Stewardship Coordinator.
"Since I took the job at Indiana, Emily has been an invaluable asset to our staff," said van Bennekom. "She's knowledgeable about the athletic department, the history of our program and most importantly the game of soccer itself. We are excited that she has decided to stay on as a coach and continue to develop her role with Indiana Women's Soccer."
Besides Basten's on-field training and coaching responsibilities she will also act as the clinics and camps coordinator.
Along with her work for Indiana Women's Soccer, Basten has extensive coaching experience on the club side for both Alliance FC and Cutters, working with high school age teams.
"I am really excited to continue my career with Indiana Women's Soccer as a volunteer assistant coach," said Basten. "I take a lot of pride in being a Hoosier and am thankful to Erwin and the entire staff for this opportunity to challenge myself and help the program grow."
