BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– The Indiana volleyball team has released their 2019 schedule for the opening season in their new arena, Wilkinson Hall. Season tickets are now available for purchase with a variety of options. The home schedule in 2019 features 17 matches.
The Hoosiers will play a challenging non-conference schedule, with their first seven matches at home inside Wilkinson Hall. In all, Indiana will match up against 10 opponents who played in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Indiana will open Wilkinson Hall on Aug. 30 with the start of the two-day Indiana Invitational as they play host to Santa Clara, Marshall, UT-Martin and FIU.
"The 2019 season is transformational in so many ways," IU head coach Steve Aird said. "It will be our first year in an amazing new building that we are grateful for. The in game experience will be a lot of fun and the students and the community will be a huge part of that for us. Attending a match at IU will be unique to say the least."
The following weekend, September 6-7, Indiana will host the Hoosier Invitational and match up against 2018 Ivy League champions Yale as well as Oregon State and Oklahoma.
The third week of the season will see the Hoosiers travel to Lexington, Ky., for the Bluegrass Battle. In addition to facing the reigning SEC champions and 2018 Sweet 16 Kentucky team, Indiana will battle perennial power Florida Gulf Coast, the 2018 ASUN champs and a team who upset No. 13 seed UCF in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Indiana will wrap up the non-conference slate with a trip to Tampa, Fla., for matches against Stetson and South Florida.
The Hoosiers will start Big Ten play on the road Sept. 27-29 and host their Big Ten home opener on Friday Oct. 4 against Illinois.
Matches against Purdue will take place at home on Wednesday Oct. 9 and on the road on Wednesday Oct. 30.
"Almost half the program will be in its first season with IU, with new talent both transferring in and beginning their college career," Aird said. "My staff has done a tremendous job building our roster and I feel we will be vastly improved from last season. That being said, our schedule is as challenging as Indiana has ever had. Our preseason presents a real challenge and we will need to be ready from the jump to put ourselves in a position for postseason play. The Big Ten will be tough as always and we are excited about the opportunities to play the nation's best"
