BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana junior outfielder Matt Gorski was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in second round and the 57th overall pick of the 2019 MLB Draft on Monday night. He is the highest Indiana draft pick since Kyle Schwarber in 2014 (1st round, fourth overall).
Gorski becomes the 95th all-time draft pick at IU. He is the seventh-highest draft pick ever at IU and is 17th overall player to be picked in the top five rounds.
Gorski, a 2019 Second Team All-Big Ten selection, served as IU's primary right fielder to start 2019, having started 14 games, but took over the centerfielder duties (43 games) after Logan Kaletha's injury. He has stolen 57 career stolen bases (3rd in the Big Ten, 25th nationally among active players), including 18 this season (3rd in the Big Ten). The junior is also second in the Big Ten in runs (58).
A First Team All-Big Ten selection and ABCA First Team All-Mideast Region honoree in 2018, Gorski started 58 games in left field and led the Hoosiers in batting average (.356), while also pacing the team with 79 hits and 123 total bases. He recorded 14 doubles, three triples, and eight home runs on the year while tallying a team-high 27 multi-hit games, including two four-hit efforts. Known for his athleticism, Gorski stole a team-high 24 bases on his 27 total attempts (.889) and owned a 1.000 fielding percentage, going errorless in left field.
An All-Big Ten Freshman team selection in 2017, Gorski made an impact in his first season with IU, serving as the primary first baseman. He was named IU's Rookie of the Year, appearing in 51 games, making 45 starts. Gorski finished tied for 10th in the Big Ten in stolen bases (15), which included eight swipes in conference games (T-4th).
The 2019 MLB Draft continues on Tuesday as rounds 3-10 are selected. It will come to a close on Wednesday as rounds 11-40 are announced.
