BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Elisa Pierre was not going to take the summer off as she prepared to enter he senior year on the IU women's golf team.
But she also had an internship requirement to fulfill as she pursued a degree in Public Financial Management.
Enter the United States Golf Association, or USGA as it is more commonly known.
Pierre was able to secure a summer position as an accounting and finance intern. We recently talked to her about how the internship is going and what the experience has been like.
What has been your role with the USGA this summer?
"My role as an accounting and finance intern with the USGA has been a really special opportunity for me. The work I do with the USGA allows me to combine my academic interest with a life-long passion of mine - golf - in a way that gives back to the game.
"I am fascinated by the projects the USGA does to grow the game on many levels. I love being able to see how things like rules, handicapping and competitions function from outside the ropes.
"Everyone here has been incredibly welcoming. I am very lucky to share this office with several Hoosiers like former IU Women's Golf members Sarah Dusman and Laura Nochta. Even though I am a ways away from California and Indiana, I feel right at home.
"My day-to-day includes recording/monitoring the organization's inflows and outflows to successfully close and report the USGA's financial operations at the end of each month. I work with everyone in my department very closely with a variety of different projects as they relate to finance, accounting, and procurement."
What are some of the "projects" that you have been a part of this summer with the USGA?
"All interns will have to do a big presentation at the end of all of our internships that reflects a major project we all worked on throughout the summer. This presentation will be in front of all the USGA staff which is over 300 people. This will take place during our last week of the internship on August 6th.
"We've also had an "Intern Olympics" which was a fun skill/golf competition within all the interns here. My team won.
"Every week we have "Lunch and Learns". During these events people from each department at the USGA teach us about their department so we get a better understanding of the USGA as a whole. They are really great because even though each intern works specifically with only one department we are able to see if we are interested in a career in other fields.
"All interns will participate in a community stream clean up event together in the next few weeks.
"There are many opportunities to play golf with everyone in the office. The USGA offers beginner lessons and Play 9 days to its employees. I've participated in a few Play 9 days which are so much fun! Luckily, there are a few more coming up.
"The USGA campus houses the USGA Golf Museum and a Test Center. I've gone into the museum countless times to look at the USGA championship trophies, see some historic artifacts and learn more about the history of the game. It's my absolute favorite place to be on the site. A golfer's dream. It's also quite fascinating to see the science behind equipment testing in the Test Center. Loved the tour I had of the Test Center. The golf robot's swing wasn't too bad!"
