Indiana Head Coach Tom Allen
Opening Statement…
"Very encouraged by overall, there's some areas obviously, that we've got to continue to work really hard at, but I thought the guys competed well. I thought we had a very good offense versus defense competition part that both sides were making plays. I thought we had too many holding calls on the O-line, so we've got to work on that. We had a Big Ten officiating crew that was here, which is great, to talk to our team and we had a couple of pass interreferences on defense, which was good to get those called, but they were costly at key times. Both sides of the ball had some penalties I thought took us out of position to make plays. As an overall evaluation, I thought the group competed well. I thought that we got a lot accomplished and some good special teams work in with our punt protection and going live with that. I think Haydon (Whitehead) is punting the ball extremely well right now. I thought our kickoff work was really effective and Nate Snyder has been really kicking the ball well and has a lot of good hang time with his kickoff and his distance. Jared Smolar as well is working hard and has had some good kicks, so I'm pleased with those guys and their work. I just felt like that it was a good next step for us, a lot to evaluate and a lot to get better at. It really felt like our guys took that first scrimmage, that we call preseason game No. 1, and it was a good measuring stick to see where we are at, where we've got to evaluate and adjust this week to get ready for preseason game No. 2, which is going to be on Saturday."
On evaluating penalties after the first scrimmage…
"Those are kind of typical in the beginning. You don't have the officials in practice every single day and if you ask the D-line, the O-line holds every play and if you ask the receivers, the DBs interfere with them every day. It's good for me to get those officials here so I can just say 'that's up to them, they either called it or they didn't' and you get that. It's typical with the first scrimmage, but I would say in some ways in terms of the knowledge of the new offensive system and the way they executed, may be a little bit ahead of what I thought we might be. Coach DeBoer and I both agree with that and just defensively a lack of mental mistakes has been encouraging. Guys in the right fits, guys making the right checks and adjustments and a lot of guys that are involved are doing a lot of good things. I'm probably maybe a little ahead in those areas of execution on each side of the ball, but now we've got to get where we are doing it at a high level all the time."
On making decisions about positions…
"I think that as a staff we had conversations yesterday after the scrimmage just about getting more specific in to the 1s and the 2s, and I think you'll see that more in practice with less emphasis on the 3s because of reps. We need to get more reps for those guys and the 2s will be a combination of certain 3s and then the guys we are trying to get ready for game day. We still aren't in game prep mode yet, but this next week leading up to preseason game number two will be a big emphasis on getting guys ready that we think are playing for us on Saturdays."
Tight Ends Coach Nick Sheridan
On what's impressed him in the tight ends group so far in camp…
"Just the effort and the willingness. They're working hard learning the new scheme, new system, asking them to do different things. It's a good group, they're fun to be around, they work hard. They've been a joy to coach."
On how the young tight ends have come along during camp…
"We're young across the board. Peyton (Hendershot) is our oldest player and he's a redshirt sophomore. T.J. Ivy is a second-year player as a redshirt freshman. Matt Bjorson is a true sophomore, a second-year player. And then Coop (Gary Cooper) and Barnsy (Ryan Barnes) as well. They're all working hard. T.J. hasn't had an opportunity to compete yet in a game, so this will be his first go around getting out there. Matt has got his feet wet a little bit in the season, and Coop, same thing, hasn't played yet. Every day is a new day. They're learning, they're growing, they have great attitudes and they have ability. It's our job as a staff to put them in positions to be successful, so we're looking forward to doing that."
Special Teams Coordinator William Inge
On the development of the group so far in camp…
"We've been very pleased with our development and performance so far as we get ourselves through camp. Being able to see the young men stay on top of all the small, minute details, that's been the focus we've been trying to apply as we come into camp. That way we can really establish ourselves as a team that's going to be more prepared coming in to games, understanding scenarios and focusing in on small details so that we don't beat ourselves on given downs."
On the development of long snapper Sean Wracher…
"He's doing really well. It's great to see how he's learning, how he's adapting. The thing that we love about Sean is he's a perfectionist, he wants it right and he works with great detail. That's not to say that Jacob Limbach is not, it's just great to see a young man that comes in here physically mature, long, athletic and ready. And has the mindset of knowing, I want to come in and help our football team. That's exactly what we want in the players on the team and that's what we're getting. We saw that in recruiting and now he's just proving to us everything that we saw in the recruiting process."
Kicker Logan Justus
On getting used to a new snapper and new holder…
"It has been going really well. We've built a lot of trust together just through the work and preparation. And then the coaches have done a really good job of putting us in game-like situations."
On becoming a leader for this football team…
"I think obviously with some new players on the special teams unit, I've been able to help them settle in, especially the likes of Sean Wracher, as well as Asher King and Chase Wyatt, who are punters as well. That is something I've really focused on going into camp because they weren't here for the majority of summer workouts. That is definitely one of the leadership areas I have focused on in the first part of camp."
