Indiana Swimming Mourns the Loss of Mike Troy

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University swimming program mourns the loss of former Hoosier, Mike Troy. Troy passed away on Saturday at the age of 78.
Troy, a charter member of the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982, swam for the Hoosiers from 1960-62 under legendary coach Doc Counsilman.
A 1960 Olympian for Team USA, Troy won gold in the men's 200m butterfly and 800m freestyle relay – both with world record times. Troy was elected to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1971.
"I had the good fortune to spend time with Mike Troy when he was the coach of the Walnut Creek Aqua Bears in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Tempe Rio Salatto Swim Club in Phoenix, Arizona," IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. "He was always so very kind to me and this was before I ever coached at Indiana University. I will always remember him as one of my dearest friends."
During his prolific swimming career, Troy won three NCAA titles, six AAU National Championships, three Pan Am Games gold medals and five Big Ten titles. Prior to the Olympics, Troy was on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Following his retirement as a swimmer, Troy became a Naval officer decorated for distinguished and heroic action. He was awarded a Silver Star for distinguished service in Vietnam.
Troy is survived by his wife Suzanne.
