BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University rising junior Mary Parsons, who hails from Delta, British Columbia, will be one of four Canadian golfers to compete at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru beginning Thursday.
"It is definitely going to be quite an experience," Parsons told BritishColumbiaGolf.org earlier this summer. "I have the B.C. Amateur, the PNGA and Canadian Amateur coming up before the Pan Ams and I think those are all stepping stones to get to where I need to be for the Pan Ams and compete for Canada on such a large stage."
The competition features 32 males and 32 females playing for individual and mixed team medals. Each country that qualified will send two males and two females to the event. Each golfer will play 18 holes per day over the four days, with the best male and female score each day used to determine the mixed team score.
"I had a sit-down with (Tristan Mullally, Canada's Pan Am Games Golf Coach) and we kind of went over what it was going to be about and I have been talking with Brigitte to see what she knows about it," Parsons said. "And from what I have heard I am very excited. I have never been to Lima and I think it will just be a really good experience as a player and to be an athlete in such a significant international competition."
Parsons finished her sophomore season at IU with a scoring average of 74.09, which was second on the team. She picked up her first collegiate tournament win at the Lady Boilermaker Classic and also had two other top 5 finishes on the year in addition to lead the Hoosiers with a score of 234 at the NCAA Championship, the Hoosiers first appearance since 2007.
