Defensive Coordinator/LBs Coach Kane Wommack
On the defensive line through the first week of camp…
"Improved. Again, I think we are anticipating that with these young, defensive linemen from the spring time and the improvement that they make. I'm telling you, sometimes the biggest jump you see in a player is from their freshman year where they redshirt to the spring time when they are getting their first, real reps. And then they come back in the summertime, some of those young players are really stepping up right now and that's exciting to see."
On younger guys who have stepped up that have surprised him…
"I'll tell you what, the young freshman, Josh Sanguinetti. He's so ball savvy, has great quicks, all those things. Those young, inside defensive linemen – C.J. Person. Jeramy Passmore is playing inside and outside. Beau Robbins on the outside. And then Sio Nofoagatoto'a. I'm telling you, those young, defensive linemen are going to be special.
On his adjustments to first camp at Indiana as just defensive coordinator…
"This is certainly, because of the relationship that Tom (Allen) and I have, and because this will be my fifth year coordinating out of the last six, certainly this is my comfort zone being the coordinator. I love building a culture of defense. I think our scheme is great, I think we're ahead of the game where the game is going right now from where it has been. But at the same time, the building of culture to get players to execute at a high level and care more about each other than they do themselves. That's what's fun about this time of year."
Cornerbacks Coach Brandon Shelby
On what's impressed him in cornerback group during first week of camp…
"We've got a lot of guys who are just enjoying the time being together, they compete. The things that they've learned in the classroom and bringing it out to the field, and the communication, I'm really excited about that. For the first time in a long time, they really have a grasp on the playbook. That's the one thing I'm excited about right now."
On how the upperclassmen have been helping out the younger guys…
"I'm starting to see what it's supposed to be - older guys bringing up the younger guys. Not only just the playbook, but how we carry ourselves on and off the field, how you come prepared, bring your playbook and taking notes. Little things like that, where in high school you really didn't have to do that, it was all memorization. Well, you can't do it here. You have to take notes because there could be something said in a meeting that might not happen, and then two days later, you see a formation, you see an adjustment that note is applicable to, so I'm really excited about Andrew Brown Jr, Raheem Layne, A'Shon Riggins, bringing those young guys like Tiawan Mullen, Larry Tracy III up and being a coach when I'm not around. I have corners by myself, so those guys can take one side of it and they can coach them up, where in the past, I didn't have that."
DB A'Shon Riggins
On what's impressed him and the development of the cornerbacks through one week…
"I think the most impressive thing is everybody is really good with the playbook. In the past years, we've had guys that have taken more time to get the playbook down, but this year, especially freshmen like Tiawan Mullen and Larry Tracy III, they're really good with the play and credit to Coach Wommack, because he made the playbook simpler this year."
DB Raheem Layne
On how this camp is different as an upperclassman…
"The defense has slowed down, the game has slowed down. From the leadership standpoint, I feel like I'm just becoming more vocal. That's what my coach and the head coach all want us to do, so it's more like a teaching thing now. So when I was a freshman, the things the upperclassmen were trying to teach me, now I see it's really the little things that matter, so I try to coach up the young kids."
DB Jaylin Williams
On how the wide receivers have looked so far in camp…
"Nick Westbrook, Donavan Hale, Miles Marshall, they've made a big transition from last year. Everybody has been working, so it's just been good to see the whole team."
