Sophomore Davis Ready for U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Rising sophomore Mitch Davis will be one of 312 golfers teeing is up at historic Pinehurst Resort & Country Club next week at the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship hosted by the United States Golf Association (USGA).
Davis, who hails from Valparaiso, Indiana, advanced to the U.S. Amateur by winning the qualifier at Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, Indiana. His scores of 69-70 gave him a shot shot cushion over second place.
The format for the tournament will see each golfer play a round on Pinehurst No. 2 course and Pinehurst No. 4 course in a stroke play competition on Aug. 12 and 13. After the completion of round two, the top 64 golfers will advance to a match play portion that begins Aug. 14 and culminates with the champion being crowned on Aug. 18.
As a freshman with the Hoosiers, Davis' scoring average of 73.27 is the second-best by a freshman in program history, trailing former All-American and current European Tour standout Jorge Campillo's freshman campaign in 2006 (72.67). He closed his rookie season with four straight Top 25 finishes, highlighted by a T16 showing at the Big Ten Championship.
