BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana softball alums Linda Cotter and Debbie Millbern Powers were among three former Hoosiers who received the Leanne Grotke Award over the weekend.
The award is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Indiana University's women's athletics program. Also earning the award was former tennis standout Brenda Hacker Freije.
Cotter played both softball and basketball at Indiana, where she was co-captain of both teams. She graduated in 1970 and went on to establish the first women's intercollegiate basketball team at Illinois Wesleyan University, and back-to-back California Community College Division II Basketball Championships as head coach of Cabrillo College.
"I'm so honored to receive the Grotke Award," said Cotter. "Thank you to IU Softball Coaches, Shonda, Kendall, and Chanda, and the team for your kind recognition. As a former IU softball player, I was so impressed with not only the team's talent, but also the character and commitment you all demonstrated. It was an honor to share time with you. Based on what I've seen, you're in for a great season and I'll be cheering you on from California."
Millbern Powers played softball, basketball and field hockey while at Indiana. As a member of the basketball team, she led the team to the 1973 Final Four.
