Five Hoosiers Honored by USTFCCCA For Classroom Success

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association announced their Academic All-Americans for the 2019 cross country season. Bailey Hertenstein, Arjun Jha, Kyle Mau, Sarah Schmitt, and Ben Veatch of Indiana Track & Field were named Academic All-Americans for their efforts in the classroom and on the course during the 2019 season.
In order to qualify for All-Academic accolades, student athletes must have had a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at the NCAA Regional Championships or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships.
Hertenstein had a breakout sophomore season where she was runner-up at the Big Ten Conference before placing sixth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a time of 20:19.9. At the national meet, the Lithia, Fla. native bounced back after falling behind early to place 31st and garner All-America honors. She was also named a USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 17.
Also, in his sophomore season, Jha rose to the occasion and placed 12th at Big Ten Championships to earn All-Big Ten Second Team honors. He also took 12th at the Great Lakes Regional before grabbing a top-100 finish at NCAA Championships.
Mau continued to be a strong hold for the Hoosiers in the final cross-country season of his career. Earning All-Big Ten First Team accolades, the Hudson, Ohio native raced to sixth at Big Ten Championships prior to his seventh-place finish at NCAA Great Lakes Regional. To end his cross-country career, Mau would place 12th to earn his first All-American honor in cross-country.
In her first cross-country season after redshirting, Schmitt held steady at the Big Ten Championships for a 12th place finish. In the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Schmitt raced to 12th place overall and second for the Hoosiers. She would also go on to nab 58th at the national meet.
Having a standout junior season, Veatch pushed himself to a fourth-place finish at Big Ten's before earning an individual auto-bid to NCAA's with a fourth-place finish at the Great Lakes Regional. Veatch would then go on to compete at NCAA Championships with the rest of the Indiana men's squad.
