BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - As Indiana broke from the huddle down 61-58, Ali Patberg had three options. IU had trailed the entire game but had crawled within three for the first time since it was 2-0 Wisconsin in the first quarter.
She thought about taking the shot herself, after all she probably had the best shooting effort of anyone on the team. But when she saw Jaelynn Penn beat her defender to the three-point line, she swung a perfect to Penn in stride.
Penn remained through the entire situation. Even though her shot hadn't been falling like she wanted it to, she never thought twice about attempting the game-tying three.
She pulled up and drilled it with 14.6 seconds left to tie the game for the first time all night. IU took all the momentum in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall carried that into the overtime period for a 75-65 win over Wisconsin Thursday night.
"I was pretty calm during the whole situation," Penn said. "It's just shoot it. First thing that went through my mind was what Kobe would do, the Mamba Mentality. Just keep shooting that thing because one's going to fall eventually."
Wisconsin jumped to a commanding 20-4 lead in the first quarter, forcing IU to burn one of its timeouts. Patberg called for her team to keep fighting, knowing that eventually they would start to put offensive runs together.
It was something that Moren has come to expect from her junior point guard. They knew it wouldn't come all at once but eventually IU began to put stops together and string five and six point runs together.
Wisconsin's ability to control break through IU's defense forced Moren to call her team into a full-court press. It's not something that IU practices often but the Hoosiers quickly adjusted to playing a faster pace of play.
"It's a great life lesson to learn," Moren said. "The game is never over until the final buzzer and if you stick together and work together, things like this can happen."
On a night where shots weren't falling, freshman forward Mackenzie Holmes' effort on the boards gave IU possessions with multiple looks at the basket.
She finished with 19 points including 11-13 from the free throw line. She grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with it. Her 19 points fell one short of tying the team high for the evening.
Late in the fourth quarter she had a pair of and-one baskets to keep the momentum on IU's side and trim the lead down to five points.
"She was huge, awesome down the stretch," Patberg said. "At halftime we told her that she was good and to stay confident. In my opinion, she's one of the best bigs in the Big Ten and we're blessed to have her."
After IU's double-digit comeback over Wisconsin Thursday night, the Hoosiers remain within two games of the top of the Big Ten standings.
IU's now riding a three-game winning streak that counters a three-game losing streak. IU's hoping the momentum of a win like this will carry over to matchups with Purdue and No. 17 Maryland next week.
With the first conference title since 1983 within reach, IU will need complete efforts in each contest and a continued defensive pressure that it showed Thursday night.
"We're nowhere we want to be and we've got a lot of work to do," Patberg said. "That's the focus from here."
