Meet the Hoosiers: Donnell Washington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Over the course of the 2019-20 wrestling season we will feature newcomers on the team with this Meet the Hoosiers series. This week, Donnell Washington, a freshman from Portage, Ind., answered some questions.
Why did you choose to wrestle at Indiana?
I chose to wrestle at Indiana because I believed in what their values were and how the coaching staff really helped the team.
What are you most excited about to begin your Hoosier wrestling career?
I'm most excited to be able to wrestle aside my teammates who are some of the most hungry and dedicated wrestlers.
When did you first start wrestling?
I started off wrestling when I was seven years old.
What is your favorite wrestling memory?
My favorite wrestling memory is when I first started wrestling and didn't know anything, my dad would buy wrestling tapes and we would watch them and go over the moves.
What is your favorite meal?
My favorite meal is pizza.
What is your favorite TV show?
My favorite TV show is All American.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is Lion King.
What is your favorite sport other than wrestling?
My favorite sport other than wrestling is soccer.
Who is your sports hero?
My sports hero is my father because even though he knew absolutely nothing about wrestling he went 110 percent at it and he is the reason I am here today.
Washington, a native of Portage, Ind., finished with a high school record for 110-8 at Portage High School. He was the runner-up at 160 pounds at the 2019 IHSAA State Championships. In his freshman year at IU Washington has recorded a 17-6 overall record. He finished runner-up at the MSU Open, Ohio Open and UNI Open. Most recently he finished in sixth-place at the Midlands Championships.
