BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It's official – Indiana Soccer has its new home.
Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson presided over a virtual dedication of the Jerry F. Tardy Center at Armstrong Stadium Monday afternoon. Made possible by a lead gift by Jeff and Margaret Jones, the Jerry F. Tardy Center combines with Bill Armstrong Stadium and Jerry Yeagley Field to offer the Hoosier men's and women's soccer programs one of the premiere soccer complexes in the country.
Located on the north end of Indiana Soccer's Bill Armstrong Stadium and overlooking Jerry Yeagley Field, the new $7 million facility provides Indiana's men's and women's soccer programs with elite training, meeting and team room spaces that are unsurpassed in intercollegiate soccer. In addition to the team-specific spaces, features and amenities, the facility also includes a spacious, second-floor VIP suite as well as a Little 500 bicycle support space that will be utilized in conjunction with the Little 500 bicycle races each spring.
"I'm so excited that this day is here, and I'm ecstatic about what the Jerry F. Tardy Center at Armstrong Stadium means to Indiana Soccer," said Dolson. "This is a beautiful, inviting, state-of-the-art facility that only enhances our soccer programs' standard of excellence. We are tremendously grateful to Jeff and Margaret Jones, whose support was critical in making this wonderful day a reality, along with the many other friends of the program and alumni who share Jeff and Margaret's passion for Indiana Soccer."
The facility is named in honor of former IU Alumni Association President and CEO Jerry F. Tardy, a 33-year Indiana University employee who was an important figure in the growth of Indiana University and Indiana Soccer before his passing in 2001. Jones was a long-time close friend of Tardy, dating back to Jones' time serving as the Director of the IU Student Foundation and subsequently when the pair worked alongside each other at the IU Alumni Association.
"Many people here today didn't have the honor to know Jerry Tardy like I did," Jones said. "No one loved IU more than Jerry Tardy. In terms of being a mentor, outside of my parents, no one had a greater impact on my life."
In addition to Dolson and Jones, other speakers at Monday's dedication included: former IU Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass; former IU Men's Soccer Coach Jerry Yeagley; IU Women's Soccer Coach Erwin van Bennekom; IU Men's Soccer Coach Todd Yeagley; and current Hoosier student-athletes Allison Jorden and Spencer Glass.
Jerry Yeagley, who started the IU Men's Soccer program as a club sport in 1963 and eventually led it to six national titles, was a long-time friend of Tardy.
"Jerry was one of IU's most outstanding leaders of his generation," Jerry Yeagley said. "He was my best friend. I'm so humbled to have my name alongside his and Bill Armstrong. I'm so proud."
Both Jerry's son, Todd, and van Bennekom talked about the profound impact the facility will have on the future of their programs.
"In 1963, when my mother and father started what is now the gold standard for college soccer, you could have only dreamed of what would be here today," Todd Yeagley said. "My dad, I'm sure, is pinching himself from where the program started. My mother and father, without your vison and leadership, this wouldn't be possible."
"I've been around many college facilities and soccer facilities and this is the best," van Bennekom said. "What this means for our program, you don't even know. We have a home now. It will accelerate the growth of our program."
Among the features of the Jerry F. Tardy Center at Armstrong Stadium:
