Bloomington, Indiana – As the inaugural season of The Pfau Course at Indiana University winds down, the accolades for IU's new home golf course are beginning to roll in.
On Monday, Golfweek tabbed Indiana University's new golf layout as the No. 4 campus golf course in the nation in its annual ratings. Designed by world-renowned course designer Steve Smyers and Hoosier golfing icon Fuzzy Zoeller, The Pfau Course is also the top-ranked course in the Big Ten.
"When we started this project, our goal was to create a course that was capable of offering a stern test for the elite, championship-caliber golfer while also being playable for the everyday golfer," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson. "We clearly accomplished that goal. We are so thankful to Steve Smyers and Fuzzy Zoeller and what they did to make this vision a reality, as well as Greg Bishop, Jim St. John, Anthony Robertson, and the entire Pfau Course staff for all they have done during our debut season.
"I also want to thank Ned and Sue Pfau along with all of our founding donors, because without them, this course would not have been possible. This project was entirely funded through private support, and this honor is as much theirs as it is ours."
Located off the 45/46 bypass on the northeast side of the Indiana University campus, The Pfau Course at Indiana University offers a unique, world-class layout that is set in the natural beauty of southern Indiana. Among the notable features on the Par-71 design are 147 bunkers, greens that range in size from 4,145 to 10,014 square feet, and six sets of tees that extend to as much as 7,908 yards.
"It is a championship golf course," said IU Women's Golf Coach Clint Wallman. "I look at golf courses and they talk about having a true test of golf. In my world, a test of golf is one that's going to test your ability, it's going to test your ability to manage situations, it's going to test every facet of your game – including mental, conditioning, the whole thing. I think the Pfau Course does such an awesome job of that because it's challenging, but it's very fair. It's special and it affords us a lot of opportunity to develop our players."
"This golf course is indescribable and it's beyond everybody's expectation," said IU Men's Golf Coach Mike Mayer. "Steve Smyers and Fuzzy Zoeller did a masterful job on a beautiful piece of land. It's a game changer for these programs. This golf course has changed the game in terms of recruiting for us and will continue to change that game for the future."
