BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana men's golf announced the signing of North Potomac, Md. native Ethan Chelf on Thursday. He will join the Hoosiers next fall.
"Ethan is a perfect fit for Indiana University and we are a perfect fit for Ethan," Coach Mike Mayer said. "He is, and has been, one of the top junior golfers Mid-Atlantic region and he is quickly developing into one of the top amateur golfers in the country. He comes from a dedicated golfing background and his passion, discipline and desire will be a great addition to our program. Academically, he has done an outstanding job preparing for college, and IU's Kelley School of Business, and he will be yet another top academic performer on our team. Although he will join a very strong and talented squad, we expect him to make an immediate positive impact as a freshman."
Chelf currently ranks No. 4 in the state of Maryland on Junior Golf Scoreboard and is No. 70 in the class of 2021. He has posted five top-20 finishes in American Junior Golf Association open tournaments, including a pair of top-five finishes, and was nominated as an AJGA Scholastic All-American. He posted a junior golf scoring average of 72.28 in 2020 and won the Middle Atlantic PGA Mid-Season Championship earlier this year with scores of 66 and 74 to finish 4-under. Chelf also competed at the 2019 US Junior at Inverness.
With Wootton High School, Chelf individually finished top-10 in each of the last three state championships and helped his team to three top-four finishes, including coming in second in 2019. He is a three-time Wootton MVP and a two-time Washington Post All-Metro Honorable Mention.
"I chose IU because I felt like it was the best fit for me," said Chelf. "The coaching staff, the guys on the team, the education, and obviously the new course and facilities really enticed me to become a Hoosier. The direction of the program is unmatched and I felt as if the team would do special things in the next few years and of course, I wanted to be a part of that. I'm very excited to get to work next year with Coach Mayer and Coach Ziedonis, my teammates and the athletic trainers to improve as player and person.
Chelf is the son of Lauren and Brett and he has one sister, Erin. He interns to major in Finance at the Kelley School of Business.
