Postgame Quotes
Indiana Head Coach Archie Miller
Opening Statement
"It was good to get back out there on the floor. I think we were all anticipating what it was going to be like. It is greatly different. The energy level, the juice in the building, the crowd, it's a different feeling for your team in terms of the energy level. We are going to really have to find ways to rally this group throughout the course of the year. I think the road team has a distinctive advantage coming in here without our fans. That is the one thing that really stood out. How you communicate with your team during the game, and how the bench is spaced out, turning around to look to grab guys to put them in the game and they aren't behind you. It is a different feel, but we needed this game bad to play against somebody else. I think everybody is excited we were obviously able to get the win. Some guys did some really good things in the game. We got a lot of guys in the game which was good. So, we have some feedback now against somebody else. Getting this out of the way now as we are getting ready to take on a Maui field that is really, really talented, we have our work cut out for us as we get down there. We got a lot of work to do over Thanksgiving and the next few days before we take off, but we are excited to be a part of that field and that tournament. It is obviously the premiere event in college basketball at this time of year. Unfortunately, we are not in Maui, but I am sure the environment in Asheville will be good."
On the four freshmen and their comfort level out on the court…
"I will have to watch the film to really be able to evaluate them. A couple of times the line ups that were out there, four freshmen at one time, is something that we weren't planning on doing. But we were able to get a lead and get minutes. That was a big thing for tonight, but I will have to watch the film. Off the top of my head, I think all those guys are working hard. I think they are all trying to learn, but you can tell the first time out there tonight was a little different. I think you will see that all of them will contribute. All of them are going to be an important piece to this team because we are going to need everybody throughout the course of the year to help develop our depth. I think all those guys are working hard and can help us."
On Trey Galloway…
"He got out in transition three or four times and made good plays. He can really finish. He is good in the open floor. I think you got a chance to see what we see in in open floor how he attacks. The big thing with Trey is the physicality on the boards. He is going to have to find a way over the course of the season to get more involved in the rebounding game. We are a small perimeter-oriented team. It helps you on one end, but you really have to be aware of it on the other end. I think that is the biggest concern, when we head to Asheville, can we rebound? We want Trey to rebound a little better, but he is definitely one of the best players we have, without question, in transition. I think in general you will be able to see more of that as we keep going here."
On Trayce Jackson-Davis giving energy to the team…
"Trayce is such an important part of what we are doing. I think you could tell at the start of this game he was a little nervous or a little rust. He missed some easy baskets, but once we settled down I thought our guys did a good job of popping in in to him a couple times to get him started. Once he got started I think he was himself. If Trayce is going to be the type of player we need him to be this year and Trayce is going to be one of the best players in college basketball, he makes a lot of that happen without anyone's help. I think the rebounding, the running, the shot blocking, those are the things that stand him about away from everyone else. You can tell he is better with his right hand around the rim and he can move on the perimeter, he is quick. He is a lot better as a player. There is no question, when your best player is out there getting offensive rebounds and blocking shots or defending the ball screen the way he was at times, he definitely gives you an anchor out there. Getting the first one under the belt is good, but when the lights are the brightest and you are playing against the best players and teams that is when Trayce usually gears it up, so I'm anxious to see him as we get down to Asheville. He is going to need to be terrific for us."
On what it is going to take to be successful in Asheville at Maui Invitational…
I don't think they have changed because we are going to Asheville compared to what I said the other day. This team right now as you watch us, we are built differently. We are a little bit more skilled and perimeter oriented. With that being said, I think we are deficient on the glass right now. Trayce can rebound the ball, Race can rebound the ball, other than that I don't know that we have a ton of guys going after the ball and rebound it. That is the biggest concern going to Asheville. With that type of field, that is what we are going to be going up against is rebounding. Number two is the offensive efficiency and taking care of the ball. I think we had about eight turnovers, but we started the game with Rob out first two or three minutes and a couple turnovers right off the bat to start the game. That is disappointing. We need to be really good in terms of our upperclassmen at taking care of the ball and playing the game freely and not trying to force something. Our efficiency and taking care of the ball especially going against that competition down there can't give away easy baskets. Rebounding and taking care of it. I think the third thing that is going to make or break us here is eventually is our free-throw shooting and three-point shooting. We have to be a better three-point shooting team and free-throw shooting team. We stress a lot of that and have worked hard at that. To go to the line tonight I think 10-of-22 and 5-of-19 from three, I think sometimes the first game jitters are in there, but other times it's like, we have to step up and be better. From the foul line tonight, we spent a ton of time on that and shooting the ball, we have good shooters getting wide open shots, guys got to make them. This is the beginning of the year, but we got to make those. That is going to make the difference in our team, if we want to be better. We are going to have to make some shots down there. I think in general we are smaller right now, especially with Joey out. When Joey returns that makes us deeper and bigger, but we are smaller and you can see we are switching more. I think that switching puts our guards on the glass a lot more and that hurts. That is where the switching hurts you. In general, right now my biggest concerns are our ability to rebound and take care of it, those two things, if we can do those two things we will be okay.
Indiana Players - Trayce Jackson-Davis and Trey Galloway
On Trey Galloway in transition…
JACKSON-DAVIS: Most definitely. You can tell he runs really well. He is a really good finisher at the other end of the floor. Especially when it is one on one. He has really good body control, so.
On his comfort level in his first game in college…
GALLOWAY: Sorry I lost my voice, screaming too much. But I would say just the older guys picking me up in practice and kind of just carrying me through the practices and just getting me through it, and strong leadership, and just trying to stay ready on the bench, and when my time was called I was going out there to compete.
On how Trey played in the season opener…
JACKSON-DAVIS: I thought he played really well. First game under your belt against another team, you have been beating up on each other in practice, so just trying to execute it. Over all I thought he played really well, especially for his first game.
On playing without a crowd…
JACKSON-DAVIS: It was definitely different at the beginning of the game. We started out sluggish and slow, then you notice you have to create your own energy. So, just trying to get energy off my teammates and try to create energy on my own. After that we got going, I thought we started playing well.
On his 3-point jumper…
JACKSON-DAVIS: I feel really comfortable with my shot, especially when I am wide open. I shoot jumpers every day in practice, so just have got to execute that and just trust in myself and my confidence.
On playing with the whole team…
GALLOWAY: We spend a lot of time with each other on and off the court, and it is just that repetition that we have in practice and stuff. So, it is just staying ready, listening to my teammates and following their lead and being ready when we got on the court. So, just staying ready and doing the little things.
On playing with all of the freshmen…
GALLOWAY: You guys obviously know, me and Anthony, Khristian we played with each other before in AAU, but just adding Jordan I think we had a good base with each other. Our relationship is really, throughout the court a team chemistry. I think that is a good factor with us and it carried over on the court. I think we picked each other up, and just locked in on defense. Just created offense for us, it helped out.
Tennessee Tech Assistant Coach Marcus King
Thoughts on the tonight's game…
"I thought our guys responded well after they learned a little bit how hard college basketball is. That is such a great opponent, Indiana University, with what Archie does with his team, and how they compete. We had a wakeup call there in the first half. The second half we went out there and competed. We learned. We grew as a team and got better. The guys stuck to the code. They competed, and they learned about their jobs."
On overall impression of Indiana…
"It's overwhelming. If you're a basketball mind like me and you understand the prestige of Indiana. The guys were overwhelmed by the facilities. Assembly Hall is a sacred ground, so when you get here you have to get past that to play a game. It can create an overall distraction for a young mind. Overall, it was a great experience. I think it is going to show well for us during conference games."
On what you saw in your team today…
"I saw fight and competitive nature. I saw our leader who is not here, Coach (John) Pelphrey. They embodied what he has taught, what he is about, and our code. They competed at a very high level. They did not allow momentary distractions or failures stop them from understanding how to be successful."
