CHICAGO, Ill. – The Gatorade Company announced their players of the year on Feb. 10 and Indiana Track & Field signee Gabriel Sanchez was named the 2019-20 Gatorade Indiana Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.
Four other Hoosiers have received this accolade prior to their arrival at Indiana. On the current roster, Dustin Horter (Ohio), Bryce Millar (New York), Ben Veatch (Indiana), and Matthew Schadler (Indiana) have all garnered this honor.
In his final season at Lowell High School, he raced to the individual state championship with a time of 15:28.7. Sanchez also broke the tape at the Dave Walker Invitational, the New Prairie Invitational, the Sectional championships, the Regional championships and the Northwest Crossroads Conference championships in 2019. He finished eighth at the Nike Cross Nationals Midwest Regional championships.
Off the course, he has volunteered locally on behalf of his school's peer-mentoring program.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track and field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. From the 12 national winners, one male and one female athlete are each named Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year. In all, 607 athletes are honored each year.
