
No. 4 Indiana Sends 23 into Friday Finals

Nine Swimmers, Divers Qualify for Championship Finals
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana University men's swimming and diving team turned in a tremendous preliminary round during the 2020 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on Friday morning.
The Hoosiers will bring back a total of 21 swimmers for evening finals, with eight in Championship Finals, eight in Consolation Finals and five in the C Finals. Heading into the third night of finals, the Hoosiers (297.0 points) trail No. 3 Michigan (555.0 points) and No. 17 Ohio State (401.0 points). IU also will add a pair of divers in the finals with one in the Championship and one in the Consolation.
100 Butterfly
Junior Bruno Blaskovic continues to display dominance during the Big Ten Championship Meet. He posted the quickest time in the prelims of the 100 Butterfly with a career-best mark of 45.29. He will be joined in the Championship Final by freshman Brendan Burns (45.97) and sophomore Van Mathias (46.02).
Representing the Hoosiers in the Consolation Final will be senior Iago Moussalem (46.71) and junior Gabriel Fantoni (46.95).
400 IM
The Hoosiers were able to advance three swimmers into the Consolation Final of the 400 IM. Junior Matt Jerden (3:46.53) led the way for Indiana, while junior Spencer Lehman (3:47.79) and sophomore Mikey Calvillo (3:48.07) each made the B Final cut. Sophomore Ben McDade will compete in the C Final after registering a time of 3:51.17 in the prelims.
200 Freestyle
Indiana will be well represented in the Friday evening finals in the 200 Freestyle. Senior Mohamed Samy qualified for the Championship Final with a time of 1:34.97. Sophomore Jakub Karl (1:35.76) and freshman Kai Bathurst (1:35.85) will each swim in the Consolation Final.
Junior Thomas Vanderbrook (1:36.65) and junior Griffin Eiber (1:36.66) both made it back for the C Final in the event.
100 Breaststroke
Sophomore Zane Backes swam the second-fastest time in the prelim heats of the 100 Breaststroke at 51.07. The time is a career-best mark, an NCAA A Cut time, and the second-quickest time in program history. Backes will swim in the Championship Final.
Junior Gary Kostbade (52.88) will be participating in the Consolation Final, while Jerden (54.04) will have a spot in the C Final.
100 Backstroke
Fantoni leads a star-studded Hoosier lineup in the Championship Final of the 100 Backstroke. He was the top qualifier with a time of 45.78. Burns (46.02) and junior Jacob Steele (46.45) will also be seeded with chances to score big for Indiana in the A Final.
Freshman Jake Marcum will swim out of the C Final after earning a spot via a qualifying time of 48.21.
3-Meter Dive
For the first time in the Big Ten Championship season, Indiana placed a diver in the Championship Final. Junior Mory Gould worked through a six-dive sheet with an NCAA Zone Qualifying Score of 362.65 to earn a spot in the A Final. Sophomore Cole VanDevender finished 10th overall to put himself in the B Final with a mark of 326.45.
