GREENVILLE, N.C. – In a back and forth game, the Indiana University baseball team fell to the No. 13-ranked Ole Miss Rebels, 9-5, on the final day of the Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, N.C. on Sunday afternoon.
With the setback, the Hoosiers fall to 6-3 on the season, snapping a six-game winning-streak. The Rebels improve to 10-1 on the year.
KEY MOMENTS
• Leading 3-0, Ole Miss looked like it was in position to add more with runners on the corners with no outs in the bottom of the third inning, but RF Hunter Jessee stopped the Rebel threat, cutting down the runner trying to score from third base on a flyout with a great throw to the plate.
• With momentum on IU's side, the Hoosiers played long-ball in the top of the fourth. CF Grant Richardson hit a tape-measure, solo shot over the right field fence, only to see 1B Jordan Fucci hit a solo homer of his own to right-center, cutting the Ole Miss lead to 3-2.
• After the Rebels responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, the Hoosiers tied the game in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Jessee drew a bases-loaded walk to score a run and start the rally.
• 2B Cooper Trinkle followed, lining a 1-2 pitch down the left-field line, tying the game with a two-run double.
• Ole Miss took the lead for good, however, in the bottom of the seventh inning, pushing across four runs.
NOTABLES
• LF Elijah Dunham extended his reached-base streak to 27-games, while DH Drew Ashley pushed his reached-base mark to 19-straight. Richardson also extended his on-base streak to 12-consecutive games.
• Fucci's home run in the fourth inning was his first as a Hoosier.
• Freshman RHP David Platt recorded two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
• All of Indiana's losses this season have come to ranked opponents. Two at the hand of No. 11 LSU and Sunday's setback to No. 13 Ole Miss.
UP NEXT
The Indiana Hoosiers will return to Bloomington, Ind, to host in-state rival Purdue in a non-Big Ten match-up on Wednesday, Mar. 4. First pitch at Bart Kaufman Field is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. ET.
