Indiana University Athletics Statement on Upcoming Team-Related Travel for IU Water Polo, Men's Golf

Bloomington, Indiana - At the recommendation of the Indiana University Athletics Medical Advisory Group and after consultation with pertinent campus officials, IU's Water Polo and Men's Golf teams will not compete in previously scheduled competitions later this month.
The IU Water Polo team will not travel to Los Angeles this weekend for matches against UCLA and Southern California. The Men's Golf team, meanwhile, will not travel to Seattle at the end of the month for the Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Course.
Consistent with the CDC's current risk assessment that people in places where ongoing community spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 has been reported are at elevated risk of exposure, with increase in risk dependent on the location, the advisory group identified these trips as concerning given that Los Angeles and Seattle are experiencing higher cluster outbreaks of the coronavirus and recommended that IU not participate given that the travel would be by commercial flight and the competition would be held by a host institution and not part of a conference or NCAA monitored event.
Indiana University Athletics formed its Athletics Medical Advisory Group earlier this week to provide expert medical advice to the department on issues related to the coronavirus. The group consists of Dr. Andy Hipskind, IU Athletics Chief Medical Officer; Dr. Larry Rink, IU Team Physician; and Dr. Tom Hrismalos, a specialist in infectious disease. Among other things, the advisory group is reviewing IU's competition travel plans and making recommendations based on a combination of factors, including competition location and means of transportation.
IU Athletics will continue to rely on the Advisory Group as well as pertinent campus officials as it monitors its team travel plans moving forward. In regards to conference and NCAA championship competitions, IU Athletics will also rely on the direction and guidance provided by conference and NCAA officials.
