
Leal Wins 2020 IndyStar Mr. Basketball Award, Third Straight Hoosier To Earn Honor

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the first time in school history, an Indiana University men's basketball signee has been named the IndyStar Indiana's Mr. Basketball by media and coaches throughout the state for the third straight year. Bloomington South's Anthony Leal, a 6-5 shooting guard, is the 29th winner of the state's highest individual honor in boy's basketball to pledge to attend IU and joins forward Trayce Jackson-Davis (2019, Center Grove) and guard Romeo Langford (2018, New Albany) as recent winners who went on to play for the Hoosiers. Future teammate Trey Galloway, a 6-3 shooting guard from the Culver Academies, also was among five finalists for the award.
Leal finished his career at Bloomington South with a school-record 1,620 points. He also was a first-team All-State choice, an Indiana All-Star, and was named the Bloomington Herald Times Player of the Year. He averaged 18.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as a senior with perhaps his best game in a 28-point performance in a 69-66 win at Class 3A top-ranked Silver Creek, including the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer. Earlier, Leal's bank shot at the buzzer — ended Floyd Central's 31-game home winning streak with a 51-50 overtime win.
He shot 59% from the field overall, including 37% from the 3-point line, and converted 76% of his free throws (90-for-119). Leal led the team in scoring and rebounding (4.0) and was second on the team assists (2.8) and steals (2.2). The Panthers won their sixth straight sectional title this season and were the top ranked team in the state with a 29-0 record.
He is the first winner from Bloomington South since former Hoosier Jordan Hulls was honored in 2009 after leading the Panthers to an undefeated state championship that season.
An outstanding student who is a direct admit to the Kelley School of Business, he averaged 19.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.1 steals as a junior. He led team to a sectional title and a spot in the regional championship game. As a sophomore, he made 66 3-pointers, knocking down better than 51 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc while averaging 14.4 points per game. He was named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Underclass All-State-Supreme 15 and earned a spot on the "core six" Indiana Junior All-Star team
Galloway also was an Indiana All-Star and an All-State pick.
He averaged 20.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 2.3 steals per game as a senior. After battling a wrist injury, he returned to lead the Eagles to a 15-game winning streak and a Class 4A sectional championship and set a Culver Academy scoring record with 1,537 career points and also was the school's all-time leader in assists.
He helped Culver Academies, which is coached by his father, Mark, to an Indiana Class 3A state title in 2018 and a championship game appearance in 2019. As a junior, he averaged 16.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game and earned a spot on the "core six" Indiana Junior All-Star team. He was named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Underclass All-State-Supreme 15 and was An All-State performer.
