BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—Sophomore Tina Doherty and senior Megan Abarta helped pace Indiana Water Polo this past season and both were awarded with All-America accolades for their efforts. Doherty was named to the ACWPC Third-Team while Abarta received Honorable-Mention honors. The Hoosiers finished the season 13-5, including a 10-game winning streak to end the season.
Doherty led the Hoosiers and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 50 goals on the season and also finished with five assists and 16 steals, while recording five field blocks. Her .633 shooting percentage topped all Indiana players and she recorded her second-career six-goal game on Mar. 7 against Cal Lutheran. Doherty scored at least three goals in 11 of the Hoosier's 18 games this season.
"This past year, Tina Doherty took her game to new heights," Head Coach Taylor Dodson said. "She stayed dedicated and driven through several difficulties, leading to her excellence in and out of the pool. Tina is looked up to by her teammates and truly deserves this honor. I am so proud of her but she and I both know this is just the beginning. Congratulations, Tina!"
Abarta finished her senior season at IU scoring 37 goals, while recording 13 assists and a team-high 18 steals. In the MPSF, she was tied for seventh in goals and tied for eighth in steals. In her game against Long Beach State on Feb. 9, she scored a career-high five goals.
"No one has ever smiled more consistently at practice than Megan Abarta," Dodson said. "She is continuously positive but don't let that fool you, she is also a fierce competitor. In and out of the water, Megan is a respected leader of our program. She excels in academics as well as athletics, setting the bar very high. I cannot thank her enough for her devotion to the betterment of our program. Congratulations Meg, you deserve it!"
