BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In our second Q&A, IUHoosiers.com catches up with junior LHP Tommy Sommer. This past season, Sommer posted a record of 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA in four starts for the Hoosiers. The Preseason Big Ten Honor List awardee tossed a career-high 8.2 innings in a win over High Point on Feb. 29 and also tallied a win over UT-Martin on Feb. 21.
Q: Where are you at right now?
At home in Carmel, Indiana with my family.
Q: How are you interacting with your teammates?
We have weekly Zoom calls with our coaching staff.
Q: What are you doing for workouts?
I have some equipment at home to do some modified workouts. A lot of bodyweight movements and band work.
Q: What advice would you give your fellow Hoosiers during this time?
Although this can become very stressful and difficult, appreciate the time you have with the people you love, because you're more than likely never going to have an extended period of time with your family like this ever again.
Q: What are you most looking forward to when you get back on the field/court/course?
Just interacting with my teammates and going through our daily routine. It's something that we take for granted and often complain about when we're in the midst of it, but it truly is the relationships and friends you make along the way that I miss the most.
Q: How has the adjustment gone to online classes?
There has been a lot of modification of how I do things because our projects and exams are all different. The hardest part is finding a routine and being diligent enough to finish the year strong.
Q: What gives you encouragement and motivation during this time?
Having a belief that everything is going to work itself out. Coach Mercer always talks about controlling what you can and this situation is completely out of our grasp. We just have to use what we have to move forward and play the hand we are dealt, rather than lose ourselves in something we can't control.
Q: What is something you and your family are doing to pass the time?
My brother and I are huge Survivor fans, so we have been re-watching a bunch of seasons of it and it's been a great way for us to reconnect.
Q: What shows are you watching?
Ozark and Survivor.
Q: What is your major and what are your future career plans?
Finance. I want to become a private investment manager
