BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– IU head coach Angel Escobedo has announced the signing of Robert Deters to the Hoosiers 2020 Class.
Deters, a native of Chandler, Ind., recently captured the 2020 State Championship in the 170-pound weight class.
Deters finished an outstanding career at Castle High School with a 45-1 record in his senior season. He is ranked No. 17 in the country. Deters also won the 2018 USA Wrestling Folk Style National Championship at 152.
Deters comes from a family history of wrestling with his uncle, Matt, winning a state championship at 103 in 1994 and his dad, Rob placed fourth at 145 in 1993. His uncle, Matt, wrestled at Indiana University.
Deters was a three-sport athlete at Castle and the Senior Male MVP. He has completed community service projects with 4H Camp, Knights of Columbus and Castle Wrestling Club. He was also a IHSAA Student-Athlete Board Representative.
"We are excited to add Robert to our 2020 recruiting class," Escobedo said. "Robert had one of the most impressive runs at the state tournament, taking down two nationally ranked opponents to win the 170lb title. We project him to wrestle at 165/174. It is our goal to keep the best kids in the state home at IU and we are very excited to have Robert."
"I felt like the Indiana coaches have the same goals as I do on and off the mat and I think that they are going to be able to make me into a great wrestler," Deters said. "They have two really good coaches near my weight class that will be able to give me the tools to be a good Division I wrestler."
