Alumni Q&A: Jorge Campillo
4/6/2020 11:34:00 AM | Men's Golf
On March 8, Indiana men's golf alum Jorge Campillo earned a dramatic victory in the Qatar Masters, defeating David Drysdale in a five-hole playoff. He finished the event at 13-under-271, and fought back after surrendering the lead in the final round. It marked his second European Tour victory after winning the Trophee Hassan II in 2019.
Campillo played at Indiana from 2006-09 and was a two-time All-American and Big Ten Golfer of the Year selection. In 2008, he was one of only three golfers in IU history to win a Big Ten championship, Big Ten Golfer of the Year and the Les Bolstad Award in the same season. IUHoosiers.com caught up with Campillo:
Q: Where are you right now?
I am back home in Spain.
Q: Have you been able to work on your golf game during this time?
I wish I could, we have not been allowed to leave the house since last Monday, we only can get out to buy food or to work if your job is necessary for the community.
Q: Your second European Tour win came last month in the Qatar Masters. What was the drama of that five-hole playoff like?
It was a great playoff, we played very good golf. I guess I was able to make the putts when I had to make them. I am proud the way I played on the playoff but not with the way I played 16 and 17 holes.
Q: What went through your head when you birdied on the fifth hole to secure the win?
Well, David still had a 15 footer to tie me, so I was just watching, my caddie told me that he was going to miss it left and he did.
Q: What's a typical week like during a competition week?
Normally I get there on Monday if I have time to play 9 holes I do. On Tuesday I play 9 or 18 holes, depending if I already know the golf course or not. Wednesday I usually play the pro am and then the tournament starts.
Q: What is your favorite hole you've played at any course?
That is a good question, I play so many good holes through the year. Number 17 at the Golf National in Paris.
Q: What was your most memorable moment while playing at Indiana?
I had so many, I guess the last day at NCAA finals or the last day at the Big Ten Tournament in Michigan State.
Q: When you get back to playing, what are you looking forward to most?
I am just looking forward to playing again and just to compete already. I tell you what I am not looking forward to - the right to left 5 footers haha.
