Q&A: Priscilla Schmid
4/7/2020 3:45:00 PM | Women's Golf
Junior Priscilla Schmid is coming off a shortened season that saw her claim her first tournament title, as well as a pair of Big Ten Golfer of the Week accolades. IUHoosiers.com caught up with the Montevideo, Uruguay native about her season and what she is focusing on during this time.
Q: You had a great fall season, what prepared you for that success?
During our fall semester I was going through some personal things and golf was a way to be distracted. During the summer I injured my back so I did not play a lot, but towards the end I started practicing and playing tournaments and did very well. Once our semester started I was pretty confident about my game where there were so many things going on I was not sure if I was going to keep doing so well, but I did. I was definitely not expecting to do the way I did, especially with the pain I had as well.
Q: You earned your first first-place finish of your college career at the Landfall Tradition. How exciting was that for you? What do you remember from that final round when you shot a 68 to better the field by two strokes?
When they first told me I might have won I just couldn't convince myself I finally did it. It felt like I was in a dream and about to wake up. During the last round I would tell myself I was even par, just so it would push myself to do better and better and hopefully it would be good enough that would give me a good overall score, but I was not thinking that I could be leading. Somehow, whenever I play, I always need to tell myself that I am doing worse than I actually am because it keeps me awake and pushes me to improve.
Q: What are you most looking forward to when you get back on the course to compete?
First of all I want to make sure my back recovers well and once it is, I'm just excited to travel with my team and go make some birdies.
Q: Where are you at right now?
I'm currently in Uruguay with my parents.
Q: How are you interacting with your teammates?
We Snap and text each other basically everyday on our group chats, and also have been Facetiming quite a lot.
Q: What advice would you give your fellow Hoosiers during this time?
Everyone should try to have a routine and find new things you enjoy doing at home, so no one has to leave their house and hopefully this goes away faster and we can return to IU soon.
Q: How has the adjustment gone to online classes?
The adjustment has been good. It is a bit harder to stay focused in class but the professors are being very helpful and understanding with what is going on.
Q: What is something you and your family are doing to pass the time?
We have been cooking together, playing board games and we work out together.
Q: What shows are you watching?
I have been watching an extreme amount of shows. So far I have seen: Elite, 100 Humans, Cheer, America's Next Top Model, Glee, Grey's Anatomy and some random crime tv shows that I have seen before.
Q: What is your major and what are your future career plans?
I am studying Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management. I am not sure yet what I would like to do as depending on how I'm doing golf wise, I might try going pro, and if not I would like to organize sports events.
