4/8/2020 3:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Bloomington, Indiana – Get ready to enjoy some of the classic games in Indiana Basketball history.
On Thursday, IU Athletics is launching its "Hoosier Classics" series. As the name suggests, we will re-air some of the biggest games in IU Men's and Women's Basketball and IU Football history on those program's respective Facebook pages.
The focus this week is on men's basketball and some of the great games from the Steve Alford and Calbert Cheaney eras in the 1980s and 1990s. These games will air on the IU Hoosiers All Access page on Facebook at 7 p.m. on the days listed below.
A special component of the re-broadcast of these memorable contests is that they will be done in conjunction with Facebook's Watch Party feature. This feature allows fans to not only watch the games, but the opportunity to comment on them during the broadcast as well, offering a shared viewing experience for Hoosier fans. Another perk is that some of the games are condensed by the elimination of commercial breaks and halftime periods.
In coming weeks, we will turn our attention and highlight some of the great IU Football and IU Women's Basketball games in their program histories. Schedule details will be forthcoming on IUHoosiers.com, in the #GoIU Newsletter, and on the respective program's social media accounts.

Indiana vs. Florida, Dec. 30, 1984
Game Details: Norm Sloan brought his undefeated Gators team to Indianapolis for the third annual Hoosier Classic with thoughts of upending the 12th-ranked Hoosiers in their own holiday tournament. But in spite of having a team that featured future NBA standout Vernon Maxwell, the Gators were no match for the Hoosiers, who closed their non-conference slate with a convincing 80-63 win at Market Square Arena. Indiana's starting backcourt of Steve Alford and Dan Dakich led the way, with Alford scoring 27 and Dakich adding 23.
Friday, April 10, 7 p.m. - WATCH HERE!
Indiana vs. Minnesota, Feb. 2, 1985
Game Details: The Hoosiers started the year ranked fourth nationally after advancing to the Elite Eight in 1984, but the season hadn't gone as planned. Double-digit losses to Louisville and Notre Dame happened in the season's first three games, and by the time this early-February encounter arrived, IU was in the midst of a four-game losing streak that included Bob Knight benching all of his starters except Uwe Blab in a loss at Illinois. But on this night in Assembly Hall, fans got a glimpse of what many expected the entire season as IU pushed the lead to nearly 40 in the second half before settling for an 89-66 win. Uwe Blab scored 26 and Steve Alford 24 to lead the Hoosiers.
Saturday, April 11, 7 p.m.- WATCH HERE!
Indiana vs. Minnesota, Feb. 1, 1986
Game Details: The Gophers entered the game a perfect 11-0 at home during the season, and appeared poised to stretch that home win streak to 12 when it pushed a four-point halftime lead to 11 in the second half. But with IU down by 11 with 12 minutes remaining and big man Andre Harris relegated to the bench with four fouls, the Hoosiers found a way to put together a 25-6 run back to take control and ultimately hand the Gophers their first loss at Williams Arena. Rick Calloway led IU with 21 points, while Steve Alford added 18 and Daryl Thomas added 10 of his 15 points in the second half.
Sunday, April 12, 7 p.m.- WATCH HERE!
Indiana vs. Northwestern, Jan. 17, 1987
Game Details: Riding a 10-game win streak, ranked No. 3 in the country, and five days away from a meeting with undefeated and No. 1 Iowa, there was some concern that Indiana's attention would be lacking when it hosted the 5-10 Wildcats at Assembly Hall. That didn't happen. Northwestern scored the game's first bucket, but Indiana scored 33 of the game's next 37 points and never looked back, clobbering the Wildcats 95-43. Daryl Thomas scored 18 to lead the Hoosiers, who improved to 14-1 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten.
Monday, April 13, 7 p.m.- WATCH HERE!
Indiana vs. Michigan State, Jan. 8, 1987
Game Details: On paper it appeared to be no match, as the fourth-ranked Hoosiers entered the game at 10-1 and the Spartans were 5-7. But Michigan State led by six at half and when the Spartans' Carlton Valentine – the father of future Spartan and Big Ten MVP Denzel Valentine – scored the first basket of the second half, the lead was at eight, 35-27. But that's when Alford took over. The Hoosiers' senior scored 22 of his game-high 33 points in the second half to lead a huge IU run that produced the comfortable win. Ricky Calloway added 17 for the Hoosiers, who earned their last win in Jenison Fieldhouse, the 10,004-seat venue that housed the Spartan men's basketball team for 30 years before the Breslin Center opened in the fall of 1989.
Tuesday, April 14, 7 p.m.- WATCH HERE!
Indiana vs. Kentucky, Dec. 6, 1986
Game Details: The third-ranked Hoosiers hosted the 13th-ranked Wildcats at Assembly Hall, and got all they could handle from their rivals before securing a 71-66 win in front of a sold out Assembly Hall crowd. Daryl Thomas, Joe Hillman and Steve Alford each made two free throws in the game's final 42 seconds to enable IU to overcome 26 points from Kentucky freshman guard Rex Chapman. Alford led the way for the Hoosiers, matching Chapman's 26 points for game-high honors. Chapman's backcourt mate in the game was James Blackmon, father of eventual IU standout James Blackmon, Jr.
