BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer senior defender Allison Jorden and sophomore midfielder Avery Lockwood have been named team captains for the 2020 season.
"Allison and Avery represent our program's values, philosophy and goals both on and off the field," said Head Coach Erwin van Bennekom. "As a staff, we look forward to working with them both, as well as our leadership group, to continue to raise the standards of our program."
"This year has been as unusual as it possibly could have been, no doubt," Jorden said. "Yet, this team has somehow managed to become closer, better and stronger through all of what has happened, and I really can't wait to see how that translates on the field this fall. I'm really just proud and grateful to get to be a part of it all."
A native of Scottsdale, Arizona, Jorden has played and started in 61 games for Indiana over the last four seasons. For her career she has held down the backline while tallying four goals and two assists. Jorden was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team in 2019, is a two-time Big-Ten Distinguished Scholar, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and made the 2017 Big ten Preseason Honors List.
"I'm very excited and honored to be a captain with Allison this year," said Lockwood. "Our team has grown closer during this unusual time despite being farther apart, and I know this will benefit us on and off the field. In this role I hope to help raise the level of this team and create an environment where we are never satisfied with the level we're at. I'm very thankful for this opportunity and this team, and I can't wait to see what we can accomplish this year."
Lockwood, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, started all 19 games for the Hoosiers in 2019 tallying five goals and three assists. In her first season she was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, named to the Big Ten Preseason Watch List, named a Top Drawer Soccer Top 100 Freshman and made Top Drawer's National Team of the Week on Oct. 8.
